Description

No more vendor lock-in, full control! To further enhance our technological independence and performance, we at Peopleware are taking a significant strategic step: we are migrating our core infrastructure from AWS to our own high-performance, bare metal Kubernetes environment.
For 30 years, we at Peopleware have been developing innovative cloud-based workforce management (WFM) solutions that help companies worldwide effectively plan and manage their teams, as well as optimize their workforce processes.
As a Linux System Engineer (f/m/d) at our Düsseldorf location, you will play a key role in setting up, migrating and operating our new infrastructure. You will work closely with our development and product teams to create a highly available, scalable and secure platform for our SaaS solutions.

WHAT WE OFFER:

  • Benefits: A hybrid working model (2 WFH days weekly), 30 days holiday, job bike, public transport ticket or free parking, company pension scheme, corporate benefits program, high-end IT equipment (including MacBook).
  • Feel-good atmosphere: This includes a state-of-the-art office in Düsseldorf’s Medienhafen, free full catering (breakfast, lunch, snacks, drinks), team and company events.
  • Flexibility: Do you need to adjust your working hours (part-time/full-time) or take time out (sabbatical) because your life situation has changed? If we are a match, we make many things possible.
  • Creative freedom: Bring your ideas to the table, and we’ll give you plenty of freedom for your creative development.
  • Individual development: We value our employees’ personal growth. So, if you’re not just looking for a job but opportunities to develop further, you’ve come to the right place.
  • Further training: Constantly broaden your horizons! At our open spaces, workshops, conferences, in-house meet-ups and events, or learning from mistakes.
  • Onboarding: Your direct colleagues will provide you with comprehensive training and will always be on hand to answer your questions.
  • … and lots more.

WE’RE LOOKING FORWARD TO GETTING TO KNOW YOU.

Responsibilities

WHAT YOU’LL DO:

  • Infrastructure Setup & Migration: You drive the conception and setup of our new bare metal Kubernetes platform - from the selection of hardware components to the implementation of a resilient network architecture - and accompany the migration from AWS
  • Linux system & bare metal expertise: You contribute your Linux expertise to optimize our server landscape, from provisioning (e.g. via PXE) to OS hardening and hardware management
  • Kubernetes Management: Together with your team you will be responsible for the installation, configuration, administration, scaling and maintenance of our Kubernetes clusters on our own infrastructure
  • Automation: You develop and maintain robust automation solutions for provisioning and deployment - e.g. with Terraform and Ansible
  • Operations & Optimization: You ensure stable, high-performance platform operation, including analysis, maintenance and troubleshooting, as well as performance and cost optimization
  • Security: You implement and monitor security measures at both the infrastructure and Kubernetes levels (e.g., network policies, secrets management, system hardening)
  • Internal Collaboration: As a technical interface, you will work closely with the development teams in terms of DevOps, support them in optimizing their applications for operation on our Kubernetes platform, define requirements with them and ensure smooth integration and operability

WHAT YOU BRING TO THE ROLE:

Note: We know this is a broad list of requirements. Don’t worry — no one ticks every box. If you feel this role matches your experience and strengths, we’d love to hear from you, even if you don’t meet every single point below:

  • Knowledge of Linux system administration and experience in dealing with bare metal servers (provisioning e.g. via PXE, IPMI, hardware management, BIOS/UEFI configuration) as well as common virtualization technologies (e.g. Proxmox)
  • Solid understanding of network concepts (TCP/IP, routing, switching, VLANs, firewalls, load balancing, DNS) in the data center environment and for Kubernetes (CNI)
  • Proven experience with Infrastructure as Code (IaC) and configuration management tools (e.g. Ansible, Terraform)
  • Practical experience in setting up, operating and troubleshooting Kubernetes clusters, especially on on-premise environments
  • Practical experience with distributed storage systems (e.g. Ceph) and their integration into Kubernetes (CSI)
  • Practical experience with logging and monitoring tools (e.g. Prometheus, Grafana)
  • Good knowledge of at least one programming language (e.g., Bash, Python, Go)
  • Team player with a proactive hands-on mentality, strong analytical thinking, strong problem-solving skills and the ability to communicate effectively on technical topics and share knowledge
  • Advantageous: Knowledge of CI/CD pipelines (e.g. Jenkins, ArgoCD) and databases (e.g. PostgreSQL)
