POSITION OVERVIEW:

The Literacy Consultant shall provide consultative services to students, teachers, administrators and AEA staff on literacy-related issues. The consultant will be a member of the agency’s literacy and instructional service teams, collaborating with multiple agency personnel in order to best serve districts. The consultant will provide leadership and support for quality core literacy curriculum, instruction, assessment, and intervention aligned with the Iowa Core. The consultant will support best practices through collaboration, demonstration, coaching and feedback.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Appropriately licensed by the Iowa Board of Educational Examiners
  • Master’s degree, experience in literacy instruction
  • Reading Specialist endorsement or equivalent experience in literacy instruction
  • Minimum of 4 years teaching experienceExperience or capacity to demonstrate positive interpersonal and collaborative skills, teamwork, and excellent written and verbal skills.

Responsibilities
  • Provides leadership and consultative services to local districts and AEA staff on designing, planning, implementing, and evaluating literacy curriculum, programs, strategies, and/or interventions.
  • Assists in the review and assessment of local district curricular needs around literacy curriculum issues.
  • Provides leadership and support in designing curricular strategies that infuse Iowa Core Standards into teachers’ planning and practice to improve student learning in literacy.
  • Translates current research in the areas of literacy into effective practices through collaboration, demonstration, coaching and feedback to teachers.
  • Integrates technology to the teaching and learning process.
  • Assists teachers with monitoring student progress and making instructional changes that supports student learning of the Iowa Core Standards.
  • Supports and collaborates with district and agency personnel to implement components of the Iowa Core Standards.
  • Communicates with local school districts regarding agency services.
  • Collaborates with educational partners; i.e., colleges and universities, Iowa Department of Education, area education agencies, and administrative and teacher professional organizations.
  • Plans, develops, and/or facilitates small and large group professional development for area educators and support staff.
  • Collaborates with agency personnel in providing literacy support to schools/districts.
  • Collaborates with agency personnel to build internal AEA capacity to support schools/districts.
  • Demonstrates ability to organize and manage multiple projects and activities at any given time.
  • Demonstrates ability to develop relationships within AEA and across multiple districts.
  • Demonstrates cultural competence and behaviors consistent with the core values, vision and mission of Great Prairie AEA in personal interactions and all job related activities.
  • Maintains confidentiality of LEA student and teacher information.
  • Complies with State and Federal rules and regulations and AEA policies and procedures.
  • Performs other duties and responsibilities as may be assigned by the Regional Director.
