Description
The Literacy Specialist is responsible for providing literacy support to schools, teachers, students, and school-based initiatives which positively impact student achievement. The specialist will provide services and supports in all areas related to literacy including planning, instruction, and assessment.   STC is a catalyst for success and we provide 2nd level services to member First Nations to support their education programs and local priorities which may include a focus on land-based learning, response-to-intervention (RTI), , language retention/reclamation, cultural revitalization, or other cross-curricular instruction.   RESPONSIBILITIES:   * Support school-wide literacy assessment as required within each community school; supporting literacy assessments and/or training education staff to administer the assessments.  * Coordinate regular Literacy PLC sessions and ongoing professional development for educators and literacy leads in community.  * Provide coaching and mentoring to school programs and teachers within member First Nation Education Schools.  * Provide support consistent with Response-to-Intervention frameworks, principles, and processes.  * Work in classrooms with teachers and students to support literacy program development and implementation.  * Contribute to the delivery of professional development and coaching support for education staff. * Provide guidance on literacy program initiatives and assist in data collection within member First Nation schools. * Provide support for Indigenous language instructions and language initiatives.  * Maintain reporting as outlined by STC Education and member First Nation Education departments.  * Perform other related duties as defined and assigned by the reporting Director or designate on an as and when required basis.     Working Environment:   * Standard office environment.  * Must be willing to travel STC Member First Nations as required. The incumbent can expect there will be times they will encounter inclement weather conditions during the course of driving. * Given the traditional practices of the Dakota, Cree, and Saulteaux cultures, from time to time there can be exposure to wood smoke and the burning of sacred medicines, including tobacco, sweet grass, sage or cedar, may occur within the work setting.  Education and Experience:   * A valid Saskatchewan Teaching Certificate.  * Master’s Degree in literacy curriculum or acceptable equivalent is considered an asset.  * Minimum ten (10) years recent, successful teaching experience in literacy instruction.  * Leadership experience with literacy initiatives at the school, regional, and/or provincial level.  * Certification or training in literacy specialized programs/courses (including assessment).  * Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word, Outlook, and PowerPoint with an ability to easily learn new software applications.   * Experience working within a governance structure in a community development capacity with First Nations; familiarity with First Nations culture, history is considered an asset.  Knowledge, Skills, and/or Abilities:   The ability to effectively deliver the English Language Arts curriculum(s) and other literacy-focused programs.  * The ability to provide literacy support and coaching to schools and teachers within classrooms.  * The ability to analyze problems and formulate recommendations that result in effective student programming and achievement.  * Knowledge and/or familiarity with RTI (Response to Intervention) frameworks.  * Familiarity with remote instruction/education tools and information systems such as Google Classroom, Microsoft Teams , and MySchool Sask. * The ability to develop and maintain positive relationships that foster a climate of trust and respect.  * The ability to work and communicate effectively within Saskatoon Tribal Council (STC) Education and member First Nation Education departments.  * Demonstrate strong oral and written communication skills including the ability to develop and present professional development sessions to small and large groups. * The ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.  * Dependability: able to work independently, submit accurate documentation, and seek guidance when needed.  * Receptive: accept feedback, take ownership of responsibilities, and identify areas of growth.  * Interpersonal Skills: communicates clearly, seeks solutions, and demonstrates flexibility.  * Integrity: keep sensitive information confidential and adhere to STC’s policies.  * Initiative: seeks opportunities for further development.  Other:   As a role closely involved with finances, a satisfactory criminal background check is required, upon hire.   Must provide a current, original, Canadian Criminal Record Check (CCRC) with vulnerable sector search as a condition of employment
