JOB OVERVIEW

Are you an experienced litigation legal assistant ready to take on a dynamic and hands-on role in a growing estate litigation practice? MerGen Law LLP is seeking a detail-oriented and resourceful team member who thrives in a fast-paced environment and is passionate about delivering exceptional legal support from intake to file closure. Estate litigation is our primary area of litigation; however, some matters in other civil litigation areas may also be assigned.

Qualifications:

  • 3+ years of legal assistant experience in litigation, preferably estate or civil litigation
  • Strong understanding of Alberta Rules of Court and estate litigation procedures
  • High proficiency in legal drafting, time management, and client communication
  • Excellent organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple files simultaneously
  • Self-starter with a proactive mindset and strong attention to detail
  • Experience supporting a file from intake to conclusion (“cradle to grave”

Education:

  • AEC / DEP or Skilled Trade Certificate (required

Experience:

  • Canadian litigation: 3 years (required

Responsibilities

You will work directly with our estate litigation lawyers to:

  • Draft legal documents and correspondence, including pleadings, affidavits, applications, and court forms
  • Manage litigation timelines and ensure key deadlines are met
  • Communicate professionally with clients, courts, opposing counsel, and other stakeholders
  • Conduct legal research and assist with matter strategy development
  • Collect, organize, and file evidence, including financial records, communications, and medical documentation
  • Submit court applications and filings via appropriate electronic and physical channels
  • Maintain physical and digital files, ensuring accuracy and confidentiality
  • Manage incoming inquiries using Clio Grow, including screening and assigning tasks or follow-ups
  • Open, maintain, and close files in accordance with firm policy and regulatory standards
  • Send out and follow up on retainer agreements
  • Provide billing support, including reviewing WIP, generating draft bills, and submitting final bills
  • Assist with administrative tasks within the estate litigation and civil litigation practice group
  • Support the use of artificial intelligence and other tools to increase productivity and reduce administrative burden

Technology & Tools:

  • Clio Manage & Clio Grow – for practice and intake management
  • NetDocuments – for secure document management and retrieval
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and legal research platforms
  • Comfort with using artificial intelligence tools to support document drafting, task automation, and research
