Description Parish: The Church of St. Luke Location: 1980 Hillsdale Rd., El Cajon, CA 92019 Reports to: Parish Life Director Employment Type: Part Time (hours TBD) FLSA Status: Non-Exempt Pay: contingent on experience Position Overview In conjunction with the Parish Life Director and Parish Priest, the Music Director provides leadership in the planning, execution and celebration of parish liturgies, with special emphasis on musical leadership, coordination and formation of choirs, and fostering participation in music by the assembly. Primary Responsibilities Provide music for the vigil and Sunday Masses. Music is either to be provided personally by Music Director or by coordination with either English or volunteer choirs as appropriate Play the organ and piano for vigil and Sunday Masses and coordinate with cantors as necessary Direct the choir(s) at the principal Sunday Mass celebrations as well as other major celebrations including the triduum, confirmation, first communion, solemnities during the year, and others as directed by the Parish Life Director and clergy Play and sing on major Holy Days and holidays including but not limited to: Assumption, All Saints, All Souls, Immaculate Conception, and Christmas Play at funerals and weddings, or direct one of the choirs in serving at these times In conjunction with the Parish Life director and clergy, participates in the selection of appropriate liturgical music Coordinates with the directors of the volunteer choirs regarding their selection of music for masses Coordinate and rehearse with cantors as needed Arrange for practice space for volunteer choirs and other musicians as needed Ensures that the parish musical instruments (organ, piano, etc.) are maintained, repaired and tuned as needed. Serves either as the Director or coordinates with the Director for all parish vocal and instrumental music groups. Maintains awareness of current trends in liturgy and music by reading professional journals and researching new music Invites, encourages, and enhances assembly participation in the sung liturgy; assures ongoing expansion of the parish music repertoire Recruit, train, direct, and supervise volunteer vocalists and instrumentalists Form, rehearse, and schedule choirs as required Select, train, supervise, and mentor assistant directors (i.e. team leaders) as required Develop formal and informal communication on a regular basis with music ministers Instill a sense of service and stewardship within the Ministry Other duties as assigned Requirements Knowledge and Skills Demonstrable skill as a leader of congregational singing High degree of proficiency with a principal instrument capable of providing musical leadership during liturgies, preferably keyboard, piano, or organ Able to “sight read” music Effective choral and instrumental conductor capable of directing amateur musicians, leading a choir in vocal exercises, and providing vocal training as needed Ability to lead and train musicians in music theory and application Friendly with excellent people and communication skills Ability to work flexible hours Active member of a Catholic faith community Thorough knowledge and familiarity with the organizational structure and practices of the Roman Catholic Church Education and Experience Performance skills for organ, piano, keyboard and voice Minimum five years’ experience in liturgical music Minimum two years’ experience as a choir director Bachelor’s degree in music preferred Basic to intermediate computer skills Physical Demands While performing the duties of this job the employee is regularly required to be in an office at a computer workstation and access information from a computer and use a telephone. The employee is required to be mobile to, from, and within the pastoral center, as well as maneuver throughout the facility to attend meetings, briefings, and other work-related events. The employee may be required to conduct trips to, from, and within various city and county-wide locations to attend meetings or events. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 30 pounds.
