JOB SUMMARY

We are seeking an experienced Locum Consultant in Plastic Surgery to join the Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery Department at [NHS Trust]. This is an exciting opportunity to provide high-quality care to patients while supporting elective and emergency plastic surgery services. The role will cover outpatient clinics, operating lists, and participation in the on-call rota where required.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Full GMC registration with a licence to practise.
  • Inclusion on the GMC Specialist Register in Plastic Surgery (or within 6 months of CCT).
  • Relevant experience in general plastic and reconstructive surgery.
  • Competence in managing emergency plastic surgery cases, including trauma and hand injuries.
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
  • Flexibility to start at short notice (ASAP).

DESIRABLE EXPERIENCE

  • Subspecialty interest (e.g., hand surgery, skin oncology, microsurgery, burns) – depending on service need.
  • Previous NHS consultant or senior locum experience.
  • Evidence of teaching, audit, and clinical governance involvement.
Responsibilities
  • Deliver safe, effective, and timely care to patients requiring plastic and reconstructive surgery.
  • Undertake elective and emergency operating sessions in line with departmental needs.
  • Run outpatient clinics, including new referrals and follow-up patients.
  • Participate in ward rounds and multidisciplinary team (MDT) meetings.
  • Contribute to the on-call rota for plastic surgery (as agreed).
  • Provide clinical supervision and teaching for junior doctors, trainees, and other healthcare professionals.
  • Maintain accurate and timely medical records in line with Trust policies.
  • Adhere to GMC and NHS standards of professional conduct and clinical governance.
  • Support service development and quality improvement initiatives within the department.
