LOG BUYER / PROCUREMENT SPECIALIST    ABOUT THE FREEMAN CORPORATION The Freeman Corporation is a large wood veneer manufacturer based in Winchester, KY.  We continue to invest heavily to be the supplier of choice to the top producers worldwide of flooring, doors, hardwood plywood, furniture, cabinets, and other industries. We employ approximately 200 people at this facility. JOB DESCRIPTION We seek a log procurement specialist to join our team. This position would be responsible for purchasing rotary and slicer grade veneer logs in central, eastern, and southern Kentucky, southeastern Ohio, and occasionally parts of West Virginia and Virginia. This person will cover a wide area, develop and maintain relationships with key suppliers, and accurately grade and price veneer logs for purchase or bidding. ESSENTIAL DUTIES * Build and maintain long-term relationships with log and timber suppliers to ensure a consistent and reliable flow of logs * Assess log quality and assign value to logs based on technical criteria for veneer production * Develop log bids and negotiate direct log purchases to secure logs at best price possible * Coordinate transportation of purchased logs from the supplier to The Freeman Corporation, ensuring timely, efficient, and intact delivery * Monitor market trends, pricing, and demand for specific species and grades to help inform procurement strategies * Ensure that all sourced timber complies with environmental and regulatory standards, including sustainable forestry practices   QUALIFICATIONS * Proven experience in log buying or a related field within the forestry or wood products industry * Understanding of timber / log grades, defect and species identification, forestry practices, and market trends  * Forestry or Associate Forestry degree with at least 5 years of practical log and timber procurement experience preferred but not required * Strong relationship building, communication, problem-solving and negotiation skills * Self-starter with a desire to take on responsibility and make good judgement calls * Desire and ability to travel long distances (up to 3 hours each way in a given day) to visit suppliers and inspect logs * Basic computer skills, including Excel    BENEFITS * Competitive salary commensurate with skills and experience and substantial room for growth * Company-paid vehicle as well as coverage of all transportation and log buying costs * Comprehensive benefits package including health, dental, vision, and life insurance * 401(k) with company match * Paid time off and referral program
