JOB SUMMARY

The truck driver is responsible for the safe operation of a “B” train truck and trailer combination while transporting materials interprovincially. The driver must ensure that the load is secure, paperwork is accurate, complete, and handed into the office in a timely manner. The driver must maintain constant communication with dispatch, plan their route, ensure the truck is equipped with the necessary load securement supplies, follow all Ministry of Transportation safety protocols, properly inspect the truck, trailer, and load. The driver should participate in all required training and act in a professional manner at all times. This position reports to the Operations Manager.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Education

  • Secondary School Diploma or equivalent
  • Class AZ or Class 1 truck license

Experience

  • 1 – 3 years of experience as an AZ or Class 1 truck driver preferred.
  • Experience with “B” trains or flatbed trailers is considered an asset.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

  • Mechanical aptitude and good spatial skills.
  • Knowledge of how to distribute a load on the trailer.
  • Must be able to speak, write and communicate effectively in English.
  • Able to lift 50 lbs.
  • Good understanding of the Ministry of Transportation protocols.
  • Ability to work alone for extended periods of time.
  • Good customer service skills.
  • Reliable, punctual, trustworthy, and professional.

Responsibilities
  • Operate and drive primarily “B” train truck and trailer combination to transport materials interprovincially while maintaining Ministry of Transportation safety protocols.
  • Properly secure all loads using appropriate load securement equipment for the size and type of load that is being transported. When picking up a trailer that is already loaded ensure that the load is secure before leaving the yard.
  • Perform pre-trip, in-route, and post-trip inspections of the vehicle systems. Ensure all deficiencies are reported to the Shop Manager.
  • Perform load securement checks every 2- 4 hours to ensure that the load has not shifted and that the straps, chains, and tarp is firmly secure;
  • Ensure that the minimum required load securement equipment is maintained on the truck and that the weight of all loads is within legal limits.
  • Plan trip logistics, obtain required documentation to transport materials and comply with on the road inspection station requirements.
  • Administer bills of lading, maintain electronic logs, and monitor fuel consumption.
  • Maintain communication with dispatch through the satellite system, phone, and text messages.
  • Ensure a neat and clean appearance, a clean truck, wear the appropriate PPEs, complete all mandatory training, and report accidents, incidents, and injuries in a timely manner and other duties as assigned.
