POSITION SUMMARY DEFINITION Under general supervision, performs nursing duties within the scope of the Vocational Nursing Practice Act; cares for patients in a hospital inpatient setting, outpatient clinic of a hospital, or mental health clinic; and performs other related duties as required. CLASS CHARACTERISTICS The Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN) is the fully qualified working level and is distinguished from the class of Nurse Assistant in that the LVN requires a state license and provides a broader range of skilled nursing care. POSITION QUALIFICATIONS Education: Successful completion of an accredited Vocational Nurse Program. License or Certificate: Possession of a valid California Vocational Nurse’s License issued by the California Board of Vocational Nurse and Psychiatric Technician Examiners. Intravenous Therapy (I.V.) and BLS through AHA only KNOWLEDGE & ABILITIES KNOWLEDGE Current principles, techniques, and procedures used in vocational nursing as covered in the Nurse Practice Act.      Medical terminology, acute care procedures and equipment. The use and effects of appropriate documentation of medicine and narcotics. Medication administration and any policies and procedures of the setting assigned; quality assurance program and patient safety program, infection control. Ability to: Manage emergency or crisis situations; requires judgement/action which could result in undesirable patient outcome. Perform the full range of vocational nursing duties and responsibilities per Vocational Nursing Practice Act. Follow policies and procedures for the setting assigned. Work under stressful situations and in emergency situations. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with physicians, registered nurses, patients, and co-workers and all internal and external customers. Complete and maintain reports and patient records. Make observations of situations accurately and report them so effective action can be taken according to rules of documentation and policies and procedures. Manage emergency or crisis situations; requires judgment/action which could result in undesirable patient outcomes AGE-SPECIFIC COMPETENCY Maintains, demonstrates and is assessed on the knowledge and skills necessary to provide for physical, psychosocial and cultural needs appropriate to the age of the patients serviced on his/her assigned unit.
