GENERAL JOB DESCRIPTION: The Machine Operator / Maintenance Apprentice reports to the Finishing Department Manager and is responsible for the safe and efficient setup, operation, and support of various machines within the Finishing Department. This role ensures production targets are met while maintaining quality standards and equipment reliability. In addition to core machine operation duties, the position includes performing routine preventative maintenance, conducting basic mechanical troubleshooting and diagnostics, and supporting the Maintenance team with equipment repairs and inspections. The incumbent is expected to follow all company policies and safety procedures while contributing to a productive, organized, and team-oriented work environment. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Machine Operation & Production Review daily workflow and production priorities with the Team Leader at the beginning of each shift. Set up, operate, and monitor various machines within the Finishing Department to meet quality, productivity, and safety standards. Develop proficiency on all departmental equipment and assist in training new employees on safe operation and basic machine upkeep. Enter production and job data accurately into computer systems. Prepare finished products for shipping, including labeling, wrapping, and moving skids to designated areas. Ensure finished skids are properly identified (job name, pages and card number, operator, date, quantity) and placed in the appropriate location. Ensure empty skids are available at machines as required. Perform hand assembly, organize and re-pile stock, and maintain a clean and orderly work area. Support other areas within the Finishing Department as required. Perform other related duties as assigned by the Production Manager. Equipment Maintenance & Troubleshooting Perform routine preventative maintenance in accordance with established schedules and procedures. Conduct basic mechanical troubleshooting and diagnostics to identify equipment issues. Inspect machines regularly to identify mechanical wear, malfunctions, or safety concerns. Report equipment issues promptly to the Maintenance Supervisor and provide feedback regarding machine performance and condition. Complete minor repairs within scope of training and authority. Assist the Maintenance team with more complex repairs and progressively develop advanced maintenance skills. SKILLS REQUIRED: Ability to lift materials up to 50 lbs. Strong mechanical aptitude and interest in equipment maintenance. Ability to perform basic mechanical troubleshooting and diagnostics. Strong attention to detail and organizational skills. Ability to multitask and prioritize in a fast-paced production environment. Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a team. Positive work ethic and strong attendance record. Ability to complete written documentation clearly and accurately. EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE: High School Diploma or Grade 12 G.E.D. 2 years previous machine operator or manufacturing/production experience. Exposure to preventative maintenance or mechanical repair is considered an asset. Knowledge of quality standards and workplace safety requirements. Basic computer skills are an asset.
