SKILLS AND QUALIFICATION

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS/ EXPERIENCE

  • Professional Engineer or EIT in good standing
  • 3-5 yrs experience in the field of machinery
  • Experience in an industrial complex or refinery desired
  • Knowledge of applicable industry codes, and standards
  • Knowledge of fluid mechanics, pump and other rotating equipment design
  • Excellent analytical problem solving capabilities and a proven reputation to set high standards and promote improvements
  • Leadership & communication skills to enable influence within the organization to progress valuable work items
  • Strong team working skills that enable working as part of or leading an effective team for troubleshooting or work item completion
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office suite software programs

WHAT ROLE YOU WILL PLAY IN OUR TEAM

Are you a mechanically inclined problem solver who thrives in a collaborative environment? Imperial Oil is looking for an early career Mechanical Engineer to join our team as a Machinery Reliability Engineer at the Strathcona Refinery in Edmonton, AB.
In this role, you’ll be a key technical resource for all rotating equipment across the site. You’ll work closely with cross-functional teams—including maintenance, operations, projects, and turnaround groups—to troubleshoot equipment issues, plan upgrades, and support long-term reliability strategies.
We’re seeking someone who is curious, proactive, and eager to grow. Whether you’re analyzing machinery performance or contributing to strategic planning, your work will directly impact the safety, efficiency, and sustainability of our operations.

WHAT YOU WILL DO

  • Provide technical support for rotating equipment across the refinery
  • Collaborate with business teams on troubleshooting, maintenance planning, and equipment upgrades
  • Contribute to reliability improvements through data analysis and root cause investigations
  • Support project execution and turnaround planning
  • Engage with operations and maintenance teams to drive continuous improvement

RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:

  • Provide rotating equipment technical leadership and expertise.
  • Ownership, and stewardship of machinery deliverables and metrics.
  • Ensure that machinery maintenance work standards and practices are fully defined. Update procedures and processes as required to help maintain, and improve integrity of machinery equipment.
  • Communicate to the business teams any equipment vulnerabilities with priority level/risk-justification and resolution options.
  • Take a leading role in influencing the organization through regular meetings and stewardship that highlights opportunities and vulnerabilities for machinery reliability improvements
  • Proactively identify, evaluate, and justify implementation of machinery improvements during planned maintenance events.
  • Assists with all aspects of machinery equipment selection, design, installation, commissioning, start-up planning, and maintenance during life cycle.
  • Engage/support the activities of the machinery network within company; initiate equipment or program upgrades, technology implementation as necessary to stay current with the latest practices.
  • Provide technical guidance to the millwright team.
