JOB DESCRIPTION SUMMARY
The Tool Shop Machinist is responsible for assembling, repairing, and fabricating components for tools and machines by operating a variety of manual and CNC equipment. This position interprets blueprints and design sketches to determine specifications, tolerances, and dimensions of finished parts. The role requires proficiency in setup, operation, and maintenance of machining equipment, along with a solid understanding of the manufacturing process, safety standards, and quality systems. The Machinist works independently within established procedures, demonstrates proficiency in multiple machining competencies, and provides support to maintenance and tool repair functions.
JOB DESCRIPTION
- Adhere to all environmental, health, and safety requirements.
- Read and analyze tooling blueprints and drawing specifications to determine machining requirements.
- Lay out material stock, set up, operate, and program the following machines:
- Track Lathe
- Track Mill
- Manual Lathe
- CNC Mill
- Perform basic grinding operations (Surface, Rotary, and ID/OD).
- Demonstrate a general understanding of heat treating processes.
- Assemble machined parts into sub-units or complete units as required.
- Support and interact with maintenance personnel for troubleshooting and repairs.
- Assist with ongoing tool maintenance activities.
- Perform routine equipment servicing and preventive maintenance to ensure efficient, safe operations.
- Utilize precision measuring instruments to verify accuracy and quality of parts.
- Apply problem-solving techniques to resolve machining or tooling issues.
- Maintain accurate work instructions (WI) and documentation related to assigned tasks.
- Support team members and contribute to continuous improvement initiatives (7S / TPM).
- Perform other duties as assigned.
REQUIRED SKILLS AND EDUCATION
- High School Diploma or GED required.
- Machinist Certificate from a college or technical school preferred.
- 1–3 years of related experience in a machinist or tool & die role.
- Equivalent combination of education and experience considered.
- Working knowledge of the manufacturing process; powder metal industry experience a plus.
- Strong knowledge of:
- 7S / TPM (Total Productive Maintenance)
- TS 16949 Quality Systems Requirements
- ISO-14001 Environmental Management Systems
- Ability to maintain a high level of quality and attention to detail.
- Excellent interpersonal, facilitation, and communication skills (verbal and written).
- Respected by peers and able to collaborate across teams.
