Description

Sets up and operates any machine and uses hand tools to fabricate, assemble and repair plant equipment, etc. Selects, sets up and operates machines and equipment for grinding and polishing rolls to exacting specifications. Dismantles, repairs, services, maintains, assembles and installs roll bearings.

  • Sets up, operates and repairs machines to fabricate parts within very close tolerances.
  • Does bench, floor work and all die work that’s required.
  • Knows thoroughly the working properties of the materials handled.
  • Does precision work on critical equipment on mill floor and in shop.
  • Heat treats, tempers, draws and care hardens metal alloys.
  • Repairs mold used in DC casting.
  • Knows shop mathematics, plans and lays out own shop work. Lays out materials and scribes lines to be cut, shaped, milled, drilled, or otherwise machined.
  • Uses Stores catalog and/or computer to requisition materials and transport to work area.
  • Repairs tools and equipment common to this classification.
  • Reads, interprets blueprints, schematics, charts, sketches and plans work.
  • Operates power truck, man lift, mobile equipment and cranes in performance of job.
  • Perform limited maintenance duties and provides maintenance limited assistance in their work area.
  • Sets up and operates roll grinding machines to obtain specified shapes and finishes on rolls and roll necks used throughout the plant.
  • Dismantles, repairs, services, maintains, assembles and installs roll bearing and etched rolls as directed.
  • Installs, repairs and replaces worn parts of roll chocks and bearing housing (i.e., seals, wear plates, keeper, breaker blocks). Removes, inspects, repairs and replaces roll lift jacks, and deflector jackets as required.
  • Uses profilometer and other measuring devices for measuring roll surface finish and shapes.
  • Operate hardness testing equipment and uses various sizes of micrometers.
  • Performs necessary crane hooking in moving rolls and chocks and bearings, etc.
  • Cleans, assembles, removes and reinstalls necessary equipment on roll assemblies (i.e., buffs and buff holders, scratch brushes, spray bars, strippers, etc.)
  • Grinds out spalls in mill rolls at the mill when necessary.
  • Unpacks, uncrates, cleans and mounts new equipment and supplies, such as grinding wheel mill rolls and bearings.
  • Keeps records as required for time cards, PM’s reports, surveys, etc.
  • Keeps equipment, work area and lunchroom in a clean and orderly condition.
  • Perform miscellaneous painting in their work area.
  • Performs duties associated with work roll changes at the hot line.
