The Role Job Description As a Mainframe System Programmer - MQ and WAS at Kyndryl, you will be critical in ensuring the smooth operation of our customers’ IT infrastructure. Your technical prowess will be put to the test as you troubleshoot critical customer situations and provide timely solutions to keep their systems secure, reliable, and efficient. You'll be the go-to expert for sizing and optimizing systems, ensuring our customers' business performance is always world-class. Leverages expertise in the operation and management of IT hardware, software, communications, and/or application solutions, and the resources required to plan for, develop, deliver, and support properly engineered IT services and products to meet the needs of a business. Prepares new or changed services, manages change processes, and manages performance of systems and services in relation to their contribution to business performance. Applies technical skills to support the operation and maintenance of vendor products, services, and solutions and typically have responsibility for sizing, troubleshooting, and critical client situations. Job Description of MF MQ Responsible for the administration of Websphere MQ (WMQ) subsystems and associated software on the client’s mainframes. Install, test, configure and implement mainframe WMQ and associated system software while maintaining a stable operating system environment for business applications. Perform WMQ system backups and recovery Monitors system activity for performance and availability and where necessary, tune accordingly Perform problem diagnosis and resolution. Create, maintain and use automation scripts for MQ for z/OS monitoring, alerting and problem determination and resolution Design and Implement security aspects related to MQ. Architect/Design Clustering, workload balancing in client environment Troubleshoot Infrastructure and Application issues related to MQ Evaluate and recommend changes to current and future system software requirements to meet the organization's needs. Ensure documentation of all related operational processes and procedures. Install and upgrade MQ for z/OS using Shopz Series and SMP/E Troubleshoot MQ problems using MQ command line and monitoring tools Provide primary and backup on-call support during extended hours (including nights and weekends). Provide advanced technical support and administration for IBM WebSphere Application Server running on z/OS. This is a senior-level role responsible for troubleshooting complex issues, implementing best practices, and ensuring high availability and performance of WAS environments. WAS Requirements Installation & Configuration Install, configure, and maintain IBM WebSphere Application Server on z/OS. Set up new environments (Dev, QA, Prod) and perform version upgrades using IBM Installation Manager. Advanced Troubleshooting Resolve critical WASz issues escalated from L1/L2 teams, including JVM crashes, thread dumps, and high CPU/memory utilization. Root Cause Analysis Perform deep-dive analysis for recurring problems and implement permanent fixes. Configuration & Optimization Tune WASz for high availability, scalability, and performance (e.g., thread pools, connection pools, workload management). Deployment & Automation Support complex deployments, scripting (Jython, wsadmin), and automation for z/OS environments. Security & Compliance Implement SSL/TLS, JAAS, SAF integration, and RACF security policies. Integration Work with MQ, DB2, and CICS integration points for WASz applications. Incident & Change Management Participate in major incident resolution and planned changes following ITIL processes. Mentoring & Documentation Guide L1/L2 teams, create knowledge base articles, and document best practices. Required Skills Deep WASz Expertise WebSphere Application Server for z/OS internals, JVM tuning, and z/OS subsystems. z/OS Fundamentals JCL, USS, SDSF, RACF, and SMF performance analysis. Scripting & Automation wsadmin scripting (Jython), REXX, and shell scripting. Performance Tools Dynatrace, OMEGAMON, RMF, and IBM Health Center. Networking & Security TCP/IP on z/OS, SSL/TLS configuration, SAF/RACF integration. Problem Solving Ability to analyze dumps, logs, and traces for complex issues. Required Skills and Experience 8+ Years of Mainframe MQ System Programmer 8-12 years in WASz administration and support. Certifications: IBM Certified System Administrator – WebSphere Application Server for z/OS added advantage. Expertise in MQ for z/OS installation and upgrades (ShopzSeries, SMP/E). Strong troubleshooting skills using MQ command line and monitoring tools. Experience with MQ Explorer, Tivoli, Omegamon, SYSVIEW, BMC MainView, MQATTACH, ICC. Knowledge of security configurations, workload management, and automation scripting. Install, configure, and maintain WMQ and associated system software. Monitor system performance & availability, implementing necessary tuning. Perform system backups, recovery, and troubleshooting for MQ issues. Develop automation scripts for monitoring, alerting, and issue resolution. Ensure security compliance and implement security best practices for MQ. Design clustering and workload balancing for high availability. Support on-call rotations for extended-hour coverage. Preferred Skills and Experience Bachelor’s degree in computer science or a related field. MQ upgrade from one version to another version in z/os. Administration of various MQ objects in Mainframe MQ.
