Job Description MAINTENANCE ENGINEER (MARINE STRUCTURAL), TERMINAL MAINTENANCE Nanaimo, Sidney, Comox, Horseshoe Bay or Tsawwassen The Opportunity Join BC Ferries and help keep coastal communities connected! As Terminal Maintenance Engineering continues to expand its technical expertise across the organization, we are seeking a Senior or Intermediate Structural Engineer to join our team. This is an exciting opportunity to apply your skills and experience in support of the safe, reliable operation, maintenance, and design of our terminal infrastructure, while making a meaningful impact on the communities we serve. How You Will Make a Difference As a Maintenance Engineer, you will provide technical leadership across the organization, working collaboratively with leaders throughout Terminal Engineering, including Terminal Maintenance, Terminal Construction, and Asset Services. In this role, you will deliver expert technical oversight, guidance, and support across a wide range of engineering initiatives. By leading asset inspections and managing inspection findings, you will serve as a subject matter expert on the condition and performance of our terminal assets. Your analysis and recommendations will play a key role in informing both short- and long-term asset management and strategic planning. Through the technical review of engineering designs, reports, and other deliverables, you will help ensure that solutions align with corporate standards for safety, reliability, and maintainability, while meeting regulatory requirements and industry best practices. You will also advance departmental objectives by leading technical programs, developing engineering standards and documentation, and providing specialized expertise to the broader Terminal Engineering team and stakeholders across the organization. The Role Reporting to the Senior Manager, Maintenance Engineering, the Maintenance Engineer provides technical oversight, expertise, and guidance to the Terminal Engineering Department across all terminal infrastructure, including both marine and upland assets. We are seeking a skilled professional, ideally with experience in marine structural or bridge engineering, who is eager to make a meaningful contribution to the safe, reliable operation and long-term performance of our critical infrastructure. Some of your responsibilities will be to: Oversee the condition inspection program which includes a yearly consultant-led inspection at every terminal. Conduct code and regulatory reviews to establish company compliance. Participate in, or lead, incident response and investigation for emergent situations. Provide guidance for maintenance workflow prioritization. Represent the Project Owner by providing recommendations for timing and prioritization of condition-based projects within the capital portfolio. Management of the company’s asset health program Create and revise technical standards, manuals, and guidance documents Develop and provide training in the use of standards and technical/guidance documents Complete technical reviews of designs, drawings, reports, and strategies to ensure safety, reliability, maintainability, quality, and standardization while considering department objectives and the strategic goals of the company. Provide technical oversight and promote accountability throughout Terminal Engineering to ensure recommended corrective actions are validated, documented, and executed as required. Work Requirements This opportunity requires travel to terminals and site offices; from Victoria to Prince Rupert. This may include overnight stays, work in all weather conditions, work at heights and out of a boat. At times, long days at the office may be required to meet the operational needs of the company. What you bring to the team Bachelor’s degree in a Structural, Civil, Mechanical, or related Engineering discipline Registered, or eligible to be registered, as a Professional Engineer with EGBC A minimum of 7 years of progressive engineering experience with a background in some of the following: design consulting, structural inspections, load ratings, technical writing, maintenance engineering, and project engineering Experience in the Marine Structural or Bridge Engineering fields is preferred Knowledge, Skills and Competencies Working knowledge of relevant standards, codes, bylaws, and regulations for bridge and marine structures Strong interpersonal and communication skills Proficiency using standard business applications (MS Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerBI, etc.) Valid Class 5 drivers’ licence and willingness to travel throughout coastal BC, including multi-day assignments on occasion Must be articulate in spoken and written English and able to communicate technical and business information clearly Join us! The starting salary is determined based on the successful candidate’s knowledge, experience and internal equity.
