Perform a variety of tasks involved in the upkeep of buildings, grounds and related structures, fixtures, and utilities. Work tasks include preventive maintenance as well as repair services. Services are performed in support of research facility on a continuous 24/7 basis. Respond to facility outages as applicable and tend to mechanical components and issues. Diagnose mechanical problems and determine how to correct them, checking blueprints, repair manuals, or parts catalogs, as necessary. Perform preventative maintenance on motors, controls, drives and gearboxes. Repair and maintain physical structure of facility including heating, ventilation and air-conditioning equipment. Perform simple carpentry, plumbing, painting and electric repair as needed. Performing general repair and maintenance including but not limited to fixing doors, windows, hinges, changing plugs, re-lamp, moving and replacing. Install doors locks, windows, and construct walls to meet reconstruction needs of facility. Basic Qualifications: High School Diploma or GED. Journeyman level experience in mechanical, plumbing, and electrical crafts. Knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs, uses, repair, and maintenance. Skilled in troubleshooting, installation and repair techniques. This is a position essential to the facility operation. Work schedule is subject to rotating shifts, weekends, and Holidays. Possess a valid driver license and must undergo required physical examination and vaccinations. This position requires the successful applicant to obtain and maintain the required security clearance or other authorization within the necessary timeframe required by applicable contract. US citizenship Additional Requirements: Ability to become an active member of the PIADC Fire Brigade. Fire rescue experience a plus. Shift begins and ends in New York. Physical Requirements: Perform physical activities that require considerable use of your whole body. Utilization of appropriate PPE (personal protective equipment) such as safety shoes, hard hats, hearing, and eye protection is required. Ability to climb ladders, reach overhead and lift to 50lbs. Industrial work environment that may include loud noise, heat stress, work indoors and outdoors. Assignments may require entry into biocontainment facilities, utility plants, a variety of storage buildings and constructions sites. Work within the containment laboratory requires decontamination showers. You must be physically able to move freely in environments that are restricted in space, unsteady or otherwise not easily accessible. Ability to climb ladders, and lift to 50 lbs. As a condition for employment, all personnel entering the BSL-3 biocontainment facilities at Plum Island shall not be in contact with specific susceptible animals and their premises off Plum Island for a period of five (5) days after leaving biocontainment. Currently, restricted species are cattle, sheep, goats, deer, other ruminants, and swine. Contact with horses, birds (agricultural and pet birds) and rabbits are normally permitted, but restrictions may be placed on staff working with or near-contagious agents affecting these species. Restricted livestock or other restricted animals may not be housed on the premises where the employee lives and where the quarantine cannot be enforced.
