Job Details Level: Entry Job Location: Horizon Industries - Tyler, TX Position Type: Full Time Education Level: High School Salary Range: $14.00 - $17.00 Hourly Travel Percentage: None Job Shift: Day Job Category: Skilled Labor - Trades Description The purpose of the East Texas Lighthouse for the Blind shall be the rehabilitation, education, training and employment of people who are blind and visually impaired, and the furtherance of their interests and welfare through programs designed to provide rehabilitation, training and employment opportunities, being wholly charitable and benevolent. GENERAL SUMMARY OF POSITION The Maintenance Technician (MT) levels 1,2 and 3 is an indirect labor support position, reporting to the Maintenance/Warehouse Supervisor, The MT is an industrial manufacturing mechanic responsible to care for all machinery and parts used in Horizon’s production process and to care for all facilities owned and operated by East Texas Lighthouse for the Blind. Proper care requires proactive prevention and planning as well as immediate responses to urgent problems; always carried out with calm, customer service mindset. Accomplishing these responsibilities requires constant collaboration with other MT’s, machine operators, Production Workers, Production Auditors, the Production Supervisor and other members of management. MT’s duties are performed in various environments such as manufacturing, office and outdoors. Qualifications Level 1 Technician Experience 0–2 years Supervision Requires close supervision Focus Learning and assisting Technical Skills Assists with routine PMs (lubrication, filter changes, basic inspections) Can safely operate hand tools and basic power tools Can become forklift certified Learns equipment names, parts, and functions (motors, belts, pneumatics) Basic troubleshooting (e.g., identifying loose wires, broken belts) Maintains general cleanliness and organization of work areas and toolboxes Follows and accurately logs work orders into maintenance system (Limble) Follows all standard procedures and work instructions Can reset simple faults on machines with guidance Equipment Knowledge Limited to one or two machine types in the converting line Can observe and assist in changeovers or minor mechanical tasks Facilities Maintenance Assists with basic tasks (changing light bulbs, air filter replacement, painting, removing trash were it is needed) Learns safety procedures (lockout/tagout, PPE, hazard identification) Soft Skills Demonstrates willingness to learn Takes direction well Communicates clearly with supervisors Works well with all Horizon staff and visitors Level 2 Technician Experience 2–5 years Supervision Moderate, works independently on routine tasks Focus Execution and basic troubleshooting Technical Skills Performs routine and preventive maintenance independently Troubleshoots mechanical issues: misalignments, faulty pneumatics, wear & tear Reads and interprets mechanical drawings and schematics Can replace sensors, valves, solenoids, cylinders Conducts machine changeovers with minimal assistance Uses test tools (multimeter, pressure gauges, calipers) Equipment Knowledge Proficient with multiple converting machines Understands control systems at a basic level (relay logic, PLC awareness—not programming) Facilities Maintenance Performs small plumbing and electrical repairs (outlets, leaks, HVAC filters) Works on utility systems (air compressors, lighting, minor HVAC) Soft Skills Communicates effectively across shifts Trains entry-level techs Documents work clearly in CMMS or logs Level 3 Technician Experience 5+ years Supervision Minimal, often leads Focus Troubleshooting, problem-solving, mentoring Technical Skills Diagnoses and repairs complex mechanical and electrical faults Reads and interprets electrical schematics, PLC I/O diagrams Performs advanced tasks: gear/motor alignment, servo tuning, rebuilds Programs or edits basic PLC functions (if permitted/required) Leads and executes large PMs or overhauls Equipment Knowledge Expert knowledge of full converting lines and interrelated systems Can identify root causes and propose equipment or process improvements Facilities Maintenance Manages larger repairs (electrical panels, compressors, HVAC troubleshooting) Oversees vendors/contractors during major projects Soft Skills Coaches other technicians Writes or updates PM procedures Participates in safety reviews, audits, and reliability initiative Strong communicator across departments (maintenance PHYSICAL DEMANDS Individual may need to sit, stand, or walk for long periods of time throughout the day Proper ergonomics are required for workstation design Must be able to reach above shoulder height, below the waist, or lift as required to file documents or store materials throughout the workday.
