POSITION SUMMARY
The Manager, Asset Management and Grid Modernization will play a pivotal role in modernizing and managing utilities distribution assets. This role combines strategic oversight, operational leadership, and technical involvement to ensure the utility’s infrastructure aligns with evolving industry demands, including decarbonization, electrification and grid modernization goals.
The incumbent will lead the Asset Management and Grid Modernization team and activities, ensuring system resilience, operational excellence and customer-focused delivery.
SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- Advanced protection & control and OT skills to prepare and implement grid modernization technologies
- Advanced MS Office skills
- Intermediate GIS and AutoCAD skills
- Intermediate CYME/DESS/SCADA skills for distribution system modelling and analysis
- Intermediate project management skills
- Basic financial management skills
KNOWLEDGE
- Five or more years of progressive distribution system planning & design working experience, including supervising and/or managing an engineering team in most of the following areas: distribution system design, project management, line or substation design, asset management, budgeting and Ontario Regulation 22/04 and USF or utility standards, operations and construction within electrical utility industry, system planning, protection and control, power system communication, SCADA.
- Advanced knowledge of electrical distribution designs, principles and practices of electrical engineering related to utility power distribution systems; industry standards, work practices, technical specifications, regulatory requirements (including OHSA, MOL, ESA, MOE, OEB) and proven ability to implement in the company.
- Advanced knowledge of distribution automation and protection & control applications and technologies related to distribution systems
- Intermediate knowledge and application of Ontario Regulation 22/04
- Intermediate knowledge of CSA standards
- Intermediate knowledge of the OHSA
EXPERIENCE & EDUCATION POSITIONS SUPERVISED
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering
- Professional Engineering license (P. Eng.)
- 5+ years’ experience with distribution project design, implementation and project management
- 5+ years’ experience developing and implementing protection and control for OT devices and with asset management systems

Responsibilities:
- Lead grid modernization initiatives, including integration of Distributed Energy Resources (DERs), automation technologies, and advanced analytics.
- Prepare and execute maintenance and capital plans and manage projects consistent with objectives.
- Contribute to the development and implementation of the company’s Asset Management Plan and DSP in compliance with regulatory requirements.
- Implement best practices for asset management based on industry trends and regulatory requirements and support enhancements to the asset management plan.
- Create and maintain accurate system load forecasts to support capital planning, operational decision-making, and customer needs.
- Provide technical support to Control Room operations
- Coordinate with customers, the Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO), and Hydro One for activities related to capacity expansion, ensuring alignment with system requirements and future growth demands.
- Identify and address system vulnerabilities to enhance reliability and resiliency.
- Validate outage entry records to ensure compliance with OEB reporting requirements.
- Coordinate the design, review and testing of protection, control and operational communication equipment/networks.
- Develop and Maintain engineering standards in compliance with utility standards, IEEE, and CSA.
- Manage the administration and maintenance of the Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system, the Outage Management System (OMS) and engineering analysis software used to monitor and report outages.
- Develop and monitor KPIs to assess department performance and identify improvement opportunities.
- Coordinate field implementation of protection and control settings for OT protective field devices.
- Monitor, improve and mitigate power quality issues on the distribution system and at customer sites.
- Manage and coordinate station inspections, maintenance, repairs and disposal.
- Support the development of annual OM&A and capital budgets and prepare budget variance analyses.
- Ensure the safety of public, staff and contractors in all work environments
- Support other duties as required.
