Trout CPA is seeking an experienced Nonprofit Accounting Manager to lead outsourced controllership and advisory services for grant-heavy nonprofit organizations. In this role, you’ll serve as a trusted financial partner to Executive Directors and Boards bringing clarity, compliance, and confidence to organizations doing meaningful work in their communities. This is a leadership opportunity for a nonprofit accounting professional who enjoys rolling up their sleeves while also thinking strategically. You’ll oversee fund accounting, grant compliance, and financial reporting, while guiding clients through budgeting, forecasting, and long-term sustainability. Equally important, you’ll mentor and develop CAS staff, helping build strong teams and scalable processes that support mission-driven growth. Key Responsibilities Lead and review outsourced controllership and accounting services for nonprofit, grant-funded clients Oversee fund accounting, including restricted and unrestricted funds across multiple grants Manage grant compliance reporting, allowable cost tracking, indirect cost allocations, and grantor requirements Prepare and review monthly and annual financial reporting in accordance with nonprofit GAAP Support clients with grant budgeting, cash-flow forecasting, and long-term financial sustainability planning Develop board-ready financial reports, dashboards, and KPIs to support effective governance Standardize accounting processes, internal controls, and documentation to enhance compliance and audit readiness Serve as the primary liaison to Executive Directors, finance committees, Boards, and external auditors Lead, coach, and review CAS staff work to ensure accuracy, timeliness, and adherence to nonprofit standards Assist with accounting system and process optimization, including improvements to systems, workflows, and reporting Requirements 5+ years of nonprofit accounting experience, preferably with grant-heavy organizations Experience as a Controller or Accounting Manager in a nonprofit or outsourced accounting environment Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or related field; CPA preferred Advanced knowledge of fund accounting, grant compliance, restricted funds, and program reporting Strong working knowledge of QuickBooks Online and/or Sage Intacct (including nonprofit and grant modules) Familiarity with nonprofit support systems (e.g., BILL, DonorPerfect, Cvent, iMIS, Bloomerang, Martus, or similar) Ability to clearly explain complex financial and compliance matters to non-financial stakeholders Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple clients and deadlines Consultative, client-focused mindset with a passion for mission-driven work Why You’ll Love This Role Mission-Driven Impact – Support nonprofits doing meaningful work while strengthening financial transparency and grant stewardship True Advisory Work – Move beyond bookkeeping into strategic, board-level financial partnership Leadership Without Burnout – Lead teams and clients in a structured, outsourced environment with shared resources Variety & Challenge – Work across multiple nonprofit organizations, grants, and funding models Professional Growth – Expand your leadership, advisory, and nonprofit expertise with room to grow
