The Opportunity
The Manager, Engineering leads a team of facility engineers and specialists to ensure efficient campus operations, optimizing mechanical, electrical, and energy management systems. This role drives cross-functional collaboration, provides mechanical technical oversight for projects and operations, and aligns operations with institutional sustainability and regulatory goals.
Key responsibilities include team leadership, asset management, capital planning support, and ensuring best practices in system design, maintenance, and performance. The Manager, Engineering also contributes to workforce planning, reporting, and strategic initiatives to enhance operational excellence and long-term infrastructure resilience.
Key Responsibilities/Major Duties
Leadership and Team Engagement
Lead, mentor and develop a team of facility engineers and specialists to ensure high standards in facility management and energy management, fostering collaboration and professional growth.
Ensure cross-functional coordination between mechanical, electrical, and energy management disciplines to optimize campus operations.
Support training and development initiatives for staff to enhance technical expertise and compliance with industry best practices.
Oversee workload distribution, and skill development to enhance team performance and responsiveness.
Conduct regular performance evaluations and goal setting activities and provide constructive feedback to foster a productive and cohesive team environment.
Ensure team compliance with safety protocols, operational guidelines, and regulatory standards.
With FM Leadership, provide input into the development of FM strategic objectives to inform and create FM Business Plan.
Using the FM Business Plan, contribute to developing and implementing on overall Operations and Maintenance strategic goals for alignment with strategic objectives.
Act as liaison and advisor to Facilities Management to ensure proper adherence to best practices for consultants and projects.
Provide input into recruitment planning, growth, and vacant position in Campus Operations and Maintenance for review with FM Leadership.
Operational and Project Engineering Support
Provide engineering oversight and technical guidance for Mechanical (plumbing, cooling, heating), HVAC, Building Envelope during construction and renovation projects
Participate in project and construction meetings to review designs and standards for capital and maintenance renewal projects.
Troubleshoot and resolve complex technical issues related to facility systems, equipment, and building automation.
Collaborate with facilities management teams and Integrated Facility Management service provider to implement new systems, upgrade existing systems, and incorporate energy-efficient solutions.
Collaborate with project managers, contractors, and consultants to ensure mechanical systems are installed, commissioned, and operated efficiently.
Review design drawings, specifications, and submittals to ensure compliance with institutional standards, sustainability goals, and regulatory requirements.
Conduct system assessments and recommend improvements to optimize performance and lifecycle costs.
Act as the primary liaison for the IFM service as it relates to mechanical system operations and maintenance.
Participate in regular performance reviews and audits of IFM service delivery
Capital Planning Support
Support the development of long-term capital plans for mechanical infrastructure renewal and upgrades.
Provide technical input for budgeting, funding proposals, and project justifications.
Evaluate emerging technologies and recommend investments that improve system resilience, energy efficiency, and sustainability.
Reporting and Documentation
Ensure compliance with regulatory reporting requirements, including environmental and energy reporting.
Contribute to sustainability and energy efficiency reporting efforts to align with institutional goals.
Generate and present regular reports on asset conditions, facility performance, maintenance activities, and operational issues to senior management.
Education & Experience
Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering
Education in Energy Management is an asset
7+ years of progressive experience in facilities management, mechanical/electrical systems, or building operations
5+ years of leadership experience managing teams in a technical or operational environment
Experience overseeing capital planning, project management, and asset lifecycle management
Strong background in energy management, building automation, and sustainable building practices
Experience collaborating with contractors, consultants, and facility management service providers
Strong knowledge of building systems
Preferred
Experience working in a unionized environment
Experience working in a post-secondary institution
Qualifications, Certifications or Designations
Minimum
Professional Engineer (P.Eng)
Preferred
Certified Energy Manager (CEM) or similar energy management certification is an asset
Project Management Professional (PMP) certification is an asset
A certificate from IFMA (FMP, SFP, CFM) is an asset
Skills Required
Strong leadership and people management skills, with experience in team development and performance management
Ability to interpret engineering drawings, specifications, and technical reports
Strong problem-solving skills and ability to troubleshoot complex technical issues
Experience in regulatory compliance and sustainability reporting
Effective communication skills for collaboration with engineers, consultants, contractors, and senior management
Ability to manage multiple priorities simultaneously, working independently with minimal supervision

Salary range: $97,930.00 - $148,284.00
Paid Leave: 4 Weeks’ Vacation / 14 Flex Days per year
