THE OPPORTUNITY

Alberta-Pacific Forest Industries Inc. (Al-Pac) is seeking a strategic and relationship-driven Manager, Government Relations to join our team in either our St. Albert office or mill site in Athabasca, Alberta.
Reporting to the Director, Stakeholder Relations & Sustainability (SRS), the Manager will lead Al-Pac’s government relations efforts by developing and executing strategies that support enterprise-wide objectives. This includes building strong relationships with federal and provincial governments, representing Al-Pac in meetings, events, and industry forums, and helping shape policy discussions that advance sustainable forest sector development.
Internally, the Manager will work closely with cross-functional teams and subject matter experts to monitor and influence the evolving political and regulatory landscape, ensuring Al-Pac’s interests are effectively represented and aligned with its long-term business priorities.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Post-secondary degree, preferably in Political Science, Business, Public Policy, Public Administration, other social sciences, or a related field is required.
  • Minimum 7 years’ professional experience in a corporate setting, preferably in the forestry or natural resource development sectors, is required.
  • Strong network of relationships with government representatives and a deep understanding of federal and provincial legislative and regulatory processes.
  • Knowledge of the current political landscape and key issues affecting the forestry and forest products manufacturing sector.
  • Familiarity with industry-specific policy and regulatory matters, including lobbying standards and compliance requirements.
  • Proven ability to communicate clearly and effectively—verbally, in writing, and through presentations—across diverse audiences.
  • Skilled at building trust, influencing outcomes, and developing strong stakeholder relationships with professionalism, tact, and sound judgment.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and project management skills, with the ability to plan, prioritize, and execute complex initiatives.
  • Comfortable working with sensitive information and upholding confidentiality.
  • Proficient with digital tools and applications to support business processes and reporting.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and implement strategic action plans aligned with organizational goals.
Responsibilities

Government Relations: Lead strategic engagement and advocacy with federal and provincial governments by developing and executing government relations strategies aligned with Al-Pac’s enterprise-wide priorities. Build and maintain strong relationships with elected officials, government staff, and key stakeholders. Represent Al-Pac at meetings, industry events, and public forums. Prepare advocacy materials including briefings, speaking notes, position papers, and correspondence. Provide informed recommendations through research and timely political analysis.
Operational Excellence: Monitor and report on the performance of the government relations function, setting clear objectives and ensuring accountability. Drive continuous improvement initiatives to enhance effectiveness and efficiency, align activities with KPIs, and mitigate operational risks. Collaborate across departments to align plans and resources, and ensure compliance with Al-Pac’s safety standards.
Data Analysis, Reporting, & Compliance: Research, analyze, and prepare reports, presentations, and supporting materials. Ensure all activities meet internal policies, ethical standards, and regulatory requirements. Provide guidance on compliance with lobbying regulations and oversee related reporting.
