SUMMARY: The Lab Manager is responsible for all laboratory testing related to Food Safety and Quality Assurance. The position is responsible for all daily operational functions of the laboratory utilizing approved methods and ensuring that all necessary certifications are obtained and maintained. This position advises leadership when deficiencies or deviations from the set limits and parameters, current written policies, procedures, and/or customer required lab testing occur. Additionally, this position ensures that any new procedures that may become necessary are properly written and existing policies, practices, and procedures needing modification are properly documented and subsequently implemented.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Demonstrate proficient knowledge of all required methods and procedures as needed. This includes but is not limited to:
  • Confirmation testing and when needed Enumeration for various microbes: Salmonella, Campylobacter, E Coli, Total Plate Count, Etc.
  • Stereotyping of Salmonella
  • Moisture testing
  • Pesticide residue testing
  • Antibiotic residue testing
  • Aflatoxin testing
  • Feed Chemistry and Proximate Analysis
  • Blood titer testing
  • Develop and demonstrate a working knowledge of the Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) and Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulations, implementing directives and other appropriate food safety guidance material that affects our plant and products with regards to laboratory testing.
  • Assist leadership with the implementation of action plans to attain the desired outcomes based on sound scientific results.
  • Assist leadership in the implementation of any new procedures to ensure accurate and timely results and analysis for business management decisions.
  • Maintain departmental records, report, and log to ensure documentation and design controls are appropriate, and that record retention requirements are met.
  • Make recommendations and provide justifications for additional equipment and personnel needs.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE

  • Required
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Food Science or related field or equivalent related experience AND 3+ years of experience in food processing, food safety & quality assurance OR 7+ years of relevant FSQA experience in progressively responsible roles.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills – written and verbal
  • Proficient computer skills, especially in Microsoft applications (Excel, Power Point, Outlook etc.)
  • Working knowledge of Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) and Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulations
  • Preferred
  • Poultry experience
