SUMMARY:

We have an exciting opportunity for a Manager, Portfolio Hedging, to p rovide program leadership for power supply hedging and compliance; congestion hedging and compliance; power marketing activities including but not limited to capacity, energy, and natural gas transactions; and managing key Great River Energy (GRE) relationships with ACES Power Marketing (APM), external energy suppliers and brokers. This position oversees both internal staff and significant external business and contractual relationships.

KNOWLEDGE TYPICALLY ACQUIRED THROUGH A BACHELOR’S DEGREE IN BUSINESS, FINANCE, ECONOMICS, MATH, OR RELATED FIELD. A MINIMUM OF EIGHT YEARS OF PROGRESSIVELY RESPONSIBLE EXPERIENCE IN THE ENERGY INDUSTRY, INCLUDING FIVE YEARS’ EXPERIENCE WITH WHOLESALE ELECTRIC OR NATURAL GAS MARKETS, OR SIMILAR COMMODITIES, IS REQUIRED. AN ADVANCED DEGREE IN BUSINESS, FINANCE, AND/OR CERTIFICATION AS A CERTIFIED ENERGY MANAGER (CEM) IS PREFERRED.

Responsibilities
  • Oversee daily energy market activities, GRE strategies, and reporting. Analyze Midcontinent Independent System Operator (MISO) market conditions, load forecasts, generation offers, storage utilization, load management plans, and instruct adjustments as required.
  • Develop and implement market trading strategies to support GRE energy portfolio, risk reduction goals, GRE load requirements, GRE resources, and member resources.
  • Manage relationships and negotiate contracts with third-party vendors for load forecasting and wind forecasting service providers.
  • Negotiate and procure physical and financial energy transactions, directly and through APM.
  • Negotiate purchases and sales of physical capacity related to GRE and member compliance with MISO resource adequacy requirements.
  • Develop natural gas hedging strategies and transactions for GRE’s energy hedging portfolio.
  • Analyze and optimize GRE credit requirements for participation in MISO markets, auctions, and third-party transactions. Coordinate with GRE finance to ensure daily MISO credit requirements are satisfied.
  • Negotiate governing agreements with counterparties such as International Swaps and Derivatives (ISDA) and North American Energy Markets Association (NAEMA) agreements.
  • Solicit and strengthen relationships with energy market suppliers, brokers, and clearing houses.
  • Chair GRE Market Risk Committee (MRC) Sponsors group. Reports, or causes reporting, to MRC Sponsors regarding power supply resource hedge policy recommendations or concerns.
  • Organize data collection and workgroup collaboration to provide market activity information as requested by the Independent Market Monitor, MISO, and other regulatory agencies
  • Oversee GRE’s congestion hedging strategies and transactions through the use of MISO auction revenue rights (ARRs) entitlements and the financial transmission rights (FTRs) auctions.)
  • Analyze market information, develop, and implement strategies in coordination with APM for MISO annual and monthly FTR auctions to ensure compliance with GRE congestion hedging goals.
  • Develop and implement strategies to improve effectiveness of GRE’s ARR entitlements through MISO’s reserved source point, nomination, and feasibility processes.
  • Provide primary oversight of APM’s services associated with short-term energy transactions, portfolio modeling, wind optimization, capacity transactions, and ARR/FTR transactions.
  • Implement short-term and mid-term energy hedge transactions for GRE member-directed portfolios and customer portfolios in collaboration with APM and internal GRE staff
  • Supervise, coach, and cultivate department staff and other GRE employees to maximize productivity, teamwork, and employee engagement.
