QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master’s degree in library science, Library and Information Science or Information Science with five years progressively responsible experience in library management in a large unionized public library system, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience with Integrated Library Systems and expertise in the operation of a specialized library.
  • Sound knowledge of professional library circulation and cataloguing practices and procedures.
  • Proven supervisory experience with strong leadership, mentoring and team building skills.
  • Sound knowledge of relevant privacy legislation and digital security best practices.
  • Familiarity with educational research and curriculum development, Ministry of Education, TDSB curricular documents and K to 12 educations, including Copyright.
  • Ability to develop and manage a budget.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with a proven ability to work as a team player.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills, including the ability to interact with stakeholders in a sensitive, courteous manner with a customer service focus.
  • Experience participating in procurement processes including providing requirements, evaluating vendor bids, testing and the selection process.
  • Proven organizational, project management and time management skills, and the ability to meet multiple deadlines.
  • Proficient computer skills Microsoft Office, HTML, databases, Web 2.0, and library booking systems and technologies.
  • Proven ability in promoting equitable practices which value inclusiveness and diversity.

Responsibilities

OVERALL PURPOSE

Reporting to the Centrally Assigned Principal, the Manager, Professional Teaching and Learning Library is responsible for managing the operations of the TDSB Professional Teaching and Learning Library, providing library services to support the ongoing professional development of TDSB staff and curating a comprehensive collection of resources.

The position will:

  • Lead reference services across various professional practices.
  • Manage the selection, acquisition, curation, and circulation of print and electronic materials for the Professional Teaching and Learning Library.
  • Develop and maintain a comprehensive collection of resources that supports research-based best practices in education.
  • Provide leadership and supervision to Professional Teaching and Learning Library staff.

SUMMARY OF DUTIES

  • Provide leadership for reference services related to a wide range of professional practices, including pedagogical practice, professional learning, curriculum, and policy development.
  • Manage the selection and acquisition of materials tailored to support professional development for TDSB staff.
  • Curate a diverse collection of resources and regularly review for relevance and alignment with curriculum expectations and TDSB policies.
  • Collaborate with Library Program Coordinators and TDSB Instructional departments to identify and acquire relevant resources.
  • Collaborate with the LLR leadership team to establish departmental goals, objectives, and strategic direction.
  • Provide leadership and supervision to staff, including hiring, determining work priorities, deployment of staff, scheduling of work, providing support, coaching, performance management and professional learning.
  • Participate in the development, implementation, and maintenance of policies, systems, and standards for Library Professional Services.
  • Ensure compliance with relevant legislation, regulations, policies, security standards and best practices in library operations.
  • Manage and monitor the Unit budget, including expenditure review and authorization.
  • Collaborate with the Purchasing Department in the acquisition of professional library resources and materials.
  • Participate in vendor contract negotiations, contract implementation, and ongoing maintenance.
  • Work jointly with the Manager, System Cataloguing and School Collections to establish a process for cataloguing Professional Library Collection.
  • Develop online resources such as tutorials, webinars, and social media content to enhance the library’s online presence.
  • Provide guidance to educators on copyright compliance and offer specialized research support to TDSB project and writing teams.
  • Liaise with stakeholders, addressing queries, concerns, and complaints from teacher-librarians and other school-based staff.
  • Collaborate with IT support staff to troubleshoot technical issues related to the library booking system.
  • Monitor and manage the library’s booking calendar and system maintenance.
  • Participate in Integrated Library System (ILS) upgrades, maintenance, and troubleshooting.
  • Compile review and analyze statistical data and prepare various reports.
  • Measure the impact of professional development programs through established metrics and assessment tools.
  • Provide leadership in fostering equity and inclusiveness in the development and implementation of programs and services.
