POSITION SUMMARY:

Under the general direction of the Director, Building Services, Grounds & Trades, this role is responsible for managing, supervising, and administering Trade Services—a team of approximately 85 tradespeople across seven trade groups and unions, along with administrative staff and an Assistant Manager. The position ensures the efficient and effective delivery of maintenance, operations, and construction projects for the University community, overseeing daily workshop activities to maintain productivity, quality, and timely, on-budget project completion.
This $11M cost-recovery operation requires strong personnel and labour relations management, including administration of Collective Agreements and the authority to hire both unionized and non-unionized staff. The role also provides technical expertise to support safe and economical operations, manages budgeting and financial controls (procurement, contracts, revenue/expense reporting), and implements quality assurance standards. In addition, it leverages computer-assisted planning tools and strategic planning to optimize workflows and ensure both short- and long-term departmental success.

EDUCATION:

  • A University degree in a related field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Training in a skilled trade would be an asset.
  • Knowledge of WHMIS regulations and the Ontario Health & Safety Act.

EXPERIENCE:

  • A minimum of 10 years’ related experience in the trades and operations and maintenance fields including project management, planning and managing cost recovery budgets, and supervising a large unionized workforce in an institutional environment.
  • Experience with service order systems, asset management, planned maintenance and performance dashboards.

SKILLS:

  • Excellent communication (oral and written) and interpersonal skills including tact and diplomacy
  • Excellent planning, organization and budget management skills
  • Ability to motivate staff and demonstrate effective leadership
  • Must be innovative in developing new procedures as need arises
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, Power Point etc.)
