Job Overview The Transportation Manager - Routing will provide leadership and oversight for the entire Routing Department, ensuring efficient, accurate, and student‑centered route development across all programs. The Transportation Manager – Routing directs staff, systems, and processes that support daily operations while contributing to long‑range service planning, boundary‑related analysis, and routing‑related project work. This position ensures routing operations are aligned with FBISD policies, departmental goals, and service expectations established by Transportation leadership. Position Description Essential Duties and Responsibilities Routing Operations Management Oversee daily routing operations for Regular Education, Special Education, CTE, Magnet, McKinney-Vento, and specialized transportation programs. Ensure the accuracy and integrity of routing data, maps, bus stops, ride times, and load counts across all routing systems. Review, adjust, and optimize routes to support bell schedules, capacity utilization, ride-time expectations, and overall operational efficiency. Implement continuous improvement strategies to enhance route safety, service delivery, and system efficiency. Maintain routing system readiness to support real‑time operational decision‑making, including emergency response, weather impacts, and significant service disruptions. Ensure the Routing Department contributes effectively to daily operational readiness, communication, and coordination across transportation terminals. Department Leadership & Oversight Direct, supervise, and develop the Routing Department to ensure effective workload distribution, staff performance, and consistent application of FBISD routing standards. Provide coaching, guidance, and ongoing development for Routing Specialists and support staff. Ensure processes, documentation, and routing practices align with district Transportation Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs). Foster a collaborative, customer-focused culture that supports campuses, families, and Transportation leadership. Strategic Support & Analysis Provide routing expertise and input related to enrollment changes, program relocations, and boundary adjustments. Conduct routing impact analyses (ride times, load capacity, stop feasibility) to inform district planning teams. Support long‑range transportation considerations such as fleet capacity, bell schedule alignment, and campus openings, without serving as the district’s primary planner or boundary manager. Project Coordination & System Development Assist leadership with routing‑related projects such as GIS enhancements, software updates, efficiency studies, and service model refinements. Collaborate with other departments (Special Education, Planning, Technology, CTE, etc.) to execute routing initiatives that impact districtwide transportation service. Participate in strategic review processes and provide subject-matter expertise related to routing systems and operational impacts. Stakeholder Communication & Support Serve as a primary routing resource for campuses, families, and district departments. Coordinate with Transportation leadership to respond to escalations, service adjustments, or districtwide operational changes. Provide maps, reports, and routing recommendations as needed for decision‑making. Supervisory Responsibilities Directly supervises assigned routing staff Evaluate employee performance and provide coaching, feedback, and corrective action as needed. Participates in hiring, onboarding, training, and professional development of routing personnel. Ensures staff compliance with district policies, Transportation Standard Operating Procedures, and routing standards. Coordinates staffing coverage to support operational demands, peak periods, and emergency response needs. Assigns and prioritizes work to ensure timely completion of daily routing tasks and projects. Qualification Requirements To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each of the above essential duties satisfactorily. Bachelor's degree in logistics, transportation management, geography, public administration, education, or related field preferred. Four (4) years of professional experience may be considered in lieu of a degree. Valid Texas Drivers License Minimum of 5 years experience in school transportation, routing operations, logistics, or related operational management. Supervisory experience required, with proven success managing staff performance and operational processes. Experience working within or coordinating with multiple departments (Transportation, SPED, Planning, Operations) preferred. Knowledge of school bus routing systems, GIS mapping, bus stop design, and transportation safety standards. Understanding of FBISD Transportation SOPs and district expectations for safety, efficiency, customer service, and department effectiveness, as outlined in the Transportation Department Employee Handbook. Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills for evaluating routes, efficiency models, and program impacts. Skilled in leading and developing staff, supported by the district’s emphasis on leadership Strong verbal and written communication skills for collaborating with campuses, families, and district departments. Ability to manage multiple projects and timelines in a high-volume, fast-paced operational environment. Proficiency with routing and transportation software; ability to learn new systems and lead departmental adoption when needed.
