Managing Counsel, Licensing & Anti-Counterfeit: The Managing Counsel, Licensing & Anti-Counterfeit will be an integral part of the LA28 team, advising LA28 on licensing and intellectual property-related legal matters, and driving complex licensing agreements to conclusion. This position will (1) draft and negotiate myriad licensing agreements; (2) help lead LA28’s efforts to educate and protect around Olympic and Paralympic intellectual property, (3) advise multiple stakeholders on a variety of legal and intellectual property issues; and (4) generally support on legal matters across the organization, particularly in relation to licensing, intellectual property, and rights protection matters. This position will report to the Associate General Counsel & Head of Rights Protection. Key Responsibilities: Draft and negotiate myriad licensing agreements, including in relation to consumer products, co-branded arrangements with high-profile IP-holders, domestic and international Olympic and Paralympic stakeholders, and more Work closely with individual business units to anticipate, identify, and manage legal exposure and risk management, and to ensure appropriate protections around the usage and licensing of Olympic and Paralympic intellectual property Liaise closely with the International Olympic Committee to ensure efficient processes for licensing of Olympic and Paralympic intellectual property Work closely with the broader legal and rights protection team to develop and deliver both internal and external education regarding protection of Olympic & Paralympic intellectual property, particularly in relation to anti-counterfeit product Steady stream of self-directed analytical work, meetings, and decision-making, including preparing, reviewing, and negotiating all varieties of legal documents, including but not limited to agreements and legal memoranda, or other correspondence and strategic projects. Review and understand all relevant corporate/stakeholder documents (including Host City Contract, Olympic Charter, Code of Ethics, Games Agreement, etc.). Ensure compliance with applicable international, federal, state, and local laws and regulations. Keep current on industry trends and best practices Support on other projects, assignments, and negotiations as may be requested by the Associate General Counsel & Head of Rights Protection and other senior legal team members. While experience in these areas is preferred, we also look for candidates with intellectual curiosity and a demonstrated ability to learn quickly to round out areas where a candidate may not have depth of experience. Background & Requirements: Minimum of 5+ years’ experience in transactional/contract/legal affairs and licensing/intellectual property matters required. Prior in-house experience with sports properties a plus. Expectations: Concrete understanding of intellectual property, contract, commercial, and corporate law, and business transactional principles. Demonstrated ability to organize complex projects. Ability to anticipate and avert downstream legal risks. Strong interpersonal skills, including ability to communicate effectively with a variety of contacts, including external partners, senior management, and business associates. Excellent judgment, knowing when to escalate issues. Excellent drafting skills, including policies, procedures, training materials, and legal correspondence. Excellent analytical skills; capable of identifying and prioritizing issues and providing alternative solutions. Excellent project and time management skills and ability to manage and prioritize changing workloads to meet deadlines. Consistently able to make sense of complex and sometimes contradictory information to effectively solve issues. Consistently able to adapt approach and demeanor in real time to match the shifting demands of different situations. Positive and team-oriented, with a demonstrated commitment to co-creation and collaborative decision-making. High level of personal integrity and professional ethics; ability to maintain confidentiality. Education: Undergraduate degree and Juris Doctor Degree from an ABA accredited law school required. License to practice law in CA, be in good standing with the California State Bar and have the ability to practice law in California. Cover letter strongly preferred Physical Requirements and Working Conditions: Local candidates preferred. Ability to work on-site in an open office environment, based in Los Angeles, CA. The majority of work will be conducted in an office setting, requiring extended periods of time using computers, phones, and other office equipment. Hours of work may vary, including evenings, weekends, and holidays, especially during peak event periods. The annual base salary range for this position is $160,000-$175,000. The pay scale provided is the range that LA28 reasonably expects to pay as starting base compensation for this role. All LA28 compensation remains subject to final determination based on individual candidate qualifications, experience, or other reasonable criteria consistent with LA28’s operational business needs and applicable law.
