Description Founded in 1873, the non-profit U.S. Naval Institute (located at but not part of the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, MD) is an independent publisher for those who dare to read, think, speak, and write to advance the professional, literary, and scientific understanding of sea power and other issues critical to global security. The Institute is seeking a Managing Editor for their two periodicals, Proceedings and Naval History, for both print and online-only content. The Naval Institute’s team of 65 staffers is highly integrated across the book publishing, periodicals, news, events, foundation, and business areas. We work a hybrid schedule with employees in the office three days a week plus two days remote. There is flexibility in the schedule and hours, but all employees are expected to be in the office three days per week. PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Prepare the slate of articles for each issue of Proceedings working with the editor-in-chief and department editors and make editor assignments Create pagination for each issue of Proceedings and adjust as necessary during production Edit articles and department sections for each issue of Proceedings and Naval History - working closely with authors, many of whom are serving naval professionals, to strengthen and clarify their arguments, sometimes through extensive reorganization and editing Work with the design director, graphic designer, and photo editor on art selection and design to ensure an engaging reader experience—both in print and online—for assigned articles and departments - and able to research and identify photos, graphics, figures for assigned articles Read each issue of both magazines in galley and/or master, checking grammar, style, and content Manage 10-15 annual essay contests, including advertising and outreach Evaluate incoming manuscripts and essay contest submissions, checking for relevance, accuracy, and readability Requirements QUALIFICATIONS: Expert editor with strong background in writing and production/publishing Has or able to quickly gain in-depth knowledge of the military, especially the Sea Services, including current issues, doctrine, organization, weapons and equipment, and history Excellent organizational skills Proficient in Microsoft products and Adobe InDesign Working knowledge of sharing and collaboration tools such as Box and Teams Experience with Chicago Manual of Style preferred Adept at English usage and speech Able to read, analyze, and interpret technical and military-specific manuscripts Able to write and edit material for publication that conforms to prescribed style and format EXPERIENCE: At least eight years in editing, writing, and magazine publishing required.
