POSITION SUMMARY

This leadership role, based in London, reports to the Chief Legal Counsel, EMEA and is responsible for managing legal work related to development and affiliation transactions across Europe and parts of Africa. The position leads efforts to enhance efficiency in development legal processes across EMEA, including:

  • Agreements for owned, leased, managed, franchised development and pipeline transactions
  • Loans, guarantees, joint ventures, and Marriott capital investment transactions
  • Disclosure documents, due diligence, and regulatory filings
  • Adjacent and related legal matters

The Managing Vice President and Assistant General Counsel will develop strategy and provide legal support to EMEA Development and Development Asset Management teams, supervise attorneys within the practice group, and indirectly oversee Managers of Legal Services and Administrative Assistants. The role requires strong leadership, strategic thinking, and the ability to manage complex legal transactions and workstreams.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

  • JD / Law degree and admission to the bar in the UK (EU and US qualifications considered)
  • 12+ years of legal experience with complex transactions
  • Proven leadership and team management experience
  • Experience advising senior leadership and managing cross-functional legal matters

Responsibilities

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Lead and manage legal support for development and affiliation transactions
  • Allocate responsibilities across the legal team and supervise attorneys and support staff
  • Formulate policies and process improvements for development legal work
  • Ensure timely and appropriate legal support for transactions and projects
  • Maintain and update form documents and contract templates
  • Participate in and prepare for HDC and related committee meetings
  • Negotiate and draft complex agreements and contract provisions
  • Provide guidance, training, and mentorship to legal team members
  • Manage talent development, performance evaluations, and address performance concerns
  • Select and oversee outside counsel in coordination with the Chief Legal Counsel
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with internal stakeholders and discipline leaders
  • Provide strategic legal advice and ensure alignment with Marriott’s objectives
  • Navigate complex legal issues and make sound judgment calls
  • Champion process improvements and legal best practices
