What We Can Achieve Together: The Conservation Practitioner VI develops, manages and advances conservation programs, plans and methods for large-scale geographic areas. The Conservation Practitioner VI provides technical leadership and support to a business unit or Division by planning, directing and implementing preserve management programs and stewardship. They address critical threats to natural systems and individual species, foster cross-site learning among an international conservation community, and supply conservation planning teams (formerly called “eco regional” planning teams) with site or landscape-level information relevant to the planning process. They develop and implement conservation strategies, employ a full range of protection tools to acquire varying degrees of legal interest in land and implement a variety of strategies to secure public and private support for TNC conservation priorities. They coordinate community support and maintain preserved areas frequented by the visiting public. May work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, on difficult and hazardous terrain and under physically demanding circumstances. YOUR POSITION WITH TNC: The Marine and Coastal Conservation Coordinator supports, manages, and advances conservation programs for The Nature Conservancy’s Marine and Coastal Program across Solomon Islands. They support conservation work pertaining to marine and coastal ecosystems – including national projects spanning Solomon Islands and more localised community-based conservation programs and Protected Area Networks in Choiseul and Isabel provinces. This permanent full-time position is ideally based in Buala or Honiara, Solomon Islands and reports to the Solomon Islands Marine and Coastal Program Manager. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The Marine and Coastal Conservation Coordinator works collaboratively within the Solomon Islands Team to deliver impactful conservation across marine and coastal ecosystems under The Nature Conservancy Solomon Islands Strategic Plan. They work within a team, using the best available information to prioritise ecosystems for protection, including through facilitation of Ridges to Reefs conservation planning. They collaborate with local, regional, and global teams within The Nature Conservancy to design and implement conservation projects across these priority ecosystems in close partnership with government agencies, major institutions, community-based organisations, and landowners. The Marine and Coastal Conservation Coordinator supports the Solomon Islands Safety Program and trains staff and partners both in classroom and practical water settings. RESPONSIBILITIES AND SCOPE: Work within a diverse team to support and strengthen Marine and Coastal conservation efforts in Solomon Islands, including: Support the collection, management, and analysis of conservation data under guidance from the Program Manager and MERL team. Deliver training sessions to staff and partners in environmental monitoring, management, and scientific techniques. Support long-term partnerships through regular communication with Solomon Islands Government (Ministry of Fisheries and Ministry of Environment), Provincial Governments, relevant landowners, and other parties to accomplish program goals. Support the negotiation of any disputes on customary lands at or around project sites. Support the operation of the Solomon Islands Safety Program, including supply, maintenance and tracking of safety equipment; training of staff in safety protocols, incident response, tracking, and reporting; and management of safety approval and documentation across the Solomon Islands Program. Support implementation of Marine and Coastal activities in alignment with the Solomon Islands Gender Equity and Social Inclusion Strategy. Manage and support complex conservation projects, including developing and delivering work-planned activities on time and on budget. Work closely and collaboratively with colleagues and partners to accomplish program goals. Financial responsibility may include working within/managing a budget to complete projects, negotiating and contracting with vendors, assisting with budget development, and meeting fundraising targets. Frequently make independent decisions based on analysis, experience, and context. May work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, on difficult terrain and under physically demanding circumstances. Travel 30% of their time. What You’ll Bring: BA/BS, law or business degree and 5 years’ experience in natural resource management or related field or equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience managing complex or multiple projects, including staffing, workloads and finances under deadlines. Supervisory experience, including motivating, leading, setting objectives and managing performance. Experience in partnership development with non-profit partners, community groups and/or government agencies. Experience negotiating. Desired Qualifications Multi-lingual skills and multi-cultural or cross-cultural experience appreciated. Knowledge of marine and coastal management conservation practice and conservation science. Ability to explain conservation practices to technical and non-technical audiences. Knowledge of current trends and practices in conservation, land management, and natural resource preservation. Completing tasks independently with respect to timeline(s). Excellent communication skills via written, spoken, and graphical means in English and other relevant languages.
