FLEXIBLE TO ALL LOCATIONS IN BC

WSP is seeking a field-based Health & Safety Officer to oversee day-to-day health and safety during the execution of marine construction projects in BC, Canada. The position will report to the Construction Manager. The Health & Safety Officer will be part of the WSP field team. The position is anticipated to start June 2025 and run until February 2026 with opportunity to extend.
Please note that this opportunity is rotation based, two weeks on and two weeks off, at a remote project location near Squamish, BC . Travel to the project location is paid for by WSP.

Responsibilities
  • Assist Project Supervisor and other WSP staff in ensuring compliance with and enforces applicable HSE Legislation, Regulations, Codes and Standards as well as WSP and Client specific HSE requirements.
  • Work in the field on a rotation basis,10 to 13 hours per day while on rotation. Alternating dayshift and nightshift is a requirement.
  • Travel by boat will be required.
  • Demonstrate an interest in the health and safety of people; set a good example for workers by attitude, conduct and compliance with safety requirements.
  • Reviews and maintains project specific H&S program, ERP, work plans, JSA’s, and permits.
  • Serve as the initial contact for all site-specific health and safety activities.
  • Suspend any operation that threatens the health or safety of workers or the public and immediately notifying the Supervisor and Project Manager.
  • Take prudent measures to reduce hazards or to correct unsafe conditions or actions when becoming aware of such unsafe or potentially unsafe work conditions.
  • Provide for active worker participation in the project H&S Program; provide information, instruction, and training to workers necessary for the protection of their health and safety.
  • As Prime Contractor, coordinates on multi-employer project sites with all parties, including the Client and subcontractors.
  • Assess risks and identify, prioritize, and control hazards on the project, prior to starting work activities and during work activities. Include review of JSA’s and reviews FLHA’s and permits.
  • Participate in site safety meetings such as daily tailgate meetings, weekly safety meetings, etc.
  • Conduct observations and inspections; identify and implement corrective actions for hazards.
  • Complete near miss, incident, and safety observations reporting.
  • Conduct investigations and root cause analysis of any incidents.
  • Participate in client facing meetings/inspections and communicates Health and Safety stats and presentations.
  • Prepare, distribute, and maintain all safety reports and records as required by the WSP H&S Program.
  • Participates in Joint Health and Safety Committees, as applicable.Provides and maintains stock of personal protective equipment and enforces its use.
