The Welsh Government operates name-free recruitment. The recruiting panel will not see personal information such as a candidate’s name and address during the sifting process. This policy is in line with our commitment to end bias and promote equality and diversity.

Responsibilities
  • Team Leadership: Manage a team of GIS (Geographic Information Systems) experts, setting priorities and overseeing the delivery of high-quality mapping and spatial analysis to support marine planning. You’ll also help make marine data accessible online.
  • Partnership Working: Build strong relationships with key organisations like Natural Resources Wales, The Crown Estate, and the Marine Management Organisation. You’ll guide and coordinate joint mapping efforts to ensure consistency and strategic alignment.
  • Policy Support through Mapping: Use spatial data to identify opportunities and challenges in Welsh seas—such as where different marine activities overlap, where resources are located, and how sectors can work together. Your insights will directly inform marine policy.
  • Quality and Innovation: Ensure mapping outputs are accurate, timely, and well-received. You’ll also explore new methods, including mapping climate change scenarios and assessing cumulative environmental impacts.
  • Assessment Delivery: Lead the planning and delivery of environmental assessments for marine plans, including sustainability appraisals and assessments for marine protected areas.
  • Thought Leadership: Represent Welsh Government at conferences and workshops, helping raise the profile of our marine planning work and sharing best practice.
  • Briefing and Communication: Produce clear, high-quality briefings for Ministers and senior officials. You’ll use strong communication skills to build relationships across government and with external partners.
  • Coordination and Planning: Oversee multiple workstreams and ensure everything is delivered on time and to a high standard
