Job Description
Responsibilities:

Solves complex problems where precedent may not exist by:-

  • performing complex metocean forecasting work around the process of acquiring, analysing and interpreting modelled and observational data in order to provide accurate and customised metocean forecasting services to clients;
  • providing weather related planning advice for offshore marine operations;
  • developing deliverables to clients by putting interpreted data into context of the impact on marine operations;
  • proposing improvements of research methods and quality systems;
  • contributing to acquisitions activities;
  • taking on tasks that have been escalated by more junior forecasters and;
  • tracking ongoing commercial enquires to the ‘bench’ to provide invoicing information and interfaces with colleagues to offer integrated services, additional opportunities for observations or customised modelling; Often leads/coordinates the work of a small team and/or deputises the manager, but people management is not a focus. Requires a university degree and in-depth knowledge and experience of the organisation, processes and customers.

Qualifications required:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Meteorology, Physics, Mathematics or Geography or Master’s Degree in Meteorology along with a science based first degree;
  • A minimum of 3-5 years’ experience in Weather Forecasting.
  • A formal professional qualification in meteorology, if not science degree based;
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office products. Scripting in meteorological tools e.g. Python, GRADS or GEOSERVER is desirable;
  • Knowledge of both atmospheric and wave models and their limitations;
  • Previous experience working on offshore oil and gas facilities and vessels;
  • A good understanding of computer systems and networks especially relating to metocean data;
  • An enthusiasm to develop the science of meteorology and oceanography and to explore new techniques and methods to increase the accuracy and reliability of weather forecasting;
  • An active member of a professional meteorological association;
  • You must be flexible and well organised with a keen eye to deliver services to meet delivery times;
  • You must be able to manage varying and changeable workloads, and make sound decisions;
  • Team worker, both in a team and as a team leader;
  • Problem-solving/judgement: ability to observe, think critically and to solve problems using data, analysis, interpretation, and reasoning skills;
  • Able to cope and manage situations through demand spikes;
  • Decisive and willing to take responsibility;
  • Willingness to be on call and work extended hours if required.
