Description

The NMAAM Marketing Manager will serve as NMAAM’s senior marketing strategist and brand steward, responsible for developing comprehensive marketing campaigns that drive attendance, revenue, and national brand recognition in alignment with the board’s strategic objectives. This position leads content strategy, manages media relations, coordinates strategic partnerships, and ensures consistent brand messaging while directly supervising the Strategic Communications Coordinator. The Marketing Manager plays a critical role in positioning NMAAM as the “Home of Black Music Month” and America’s definitive cultural authority through strategic storytelling, partnership activation, and innovative marketing approaches that honor African American music heritage while reaching diverse national audiences.
NMAAM is the only museum dedicated to preserving the legacy and celebrating the accomplishments of the many music genres created, influenced, or inspired by African Americans. The Museum will share the story of the American Soundtrack, integrating history and interactive technology to bring the musical heroes of the past into the present.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor’s degree; Marketing, Communications, Journalism, or related field.
  • 5-7 years of professional marketing experience demonstrated success in content creation and brand management.
  • Proven track record writing impact stories, press releases, and marketing copies for diverse audiences.
  • Experience managing WordPress websites and content management systems.
  • Background in arts/cultural organizations, entertainment industry, or music-related sectors preferred.
  • Demonstrated understanding of Black culture, music industry trends, and contemporary digital culture.

TECHNICAL SKILLS:

  • Expert WordPress content management and website optimization capabilities.
  • Advanced graphic design skills in Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign) and Canva.
  • Proficiency with email marketing platforms, social media management tools, and digital analytics.
  • Experience with SEO, content optimization, and digital advertising platforms.
  • Strong photography and basic video editing skills for content creation.
  • Knowledge of media relations tools and press distribution platforms.

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES

  • Exceptional writing and editing skills with ability to adapt voice for different audiences, platforms, and cultural contexts.
  • Deep understanding of Black culture, music industry dynamics, and contemporary pop culture trends.
  • Strong visual design sense and understanding of current digital design trends and social media aesthetics.
  • Strategic thinking ability to forecast brand needs and positioning opportunities.
  • Professional presentation skills and comfort representing NMAAM externally at industry events and partnership meetings.
  • Crisis communication and reputation management experience.
  • Project management capabilities with ability to manage multiple campaigns and deadlines simultaneously.
  • Cultural sensitivity and authentic understanding of African American music heritage and community values.
