Description Master Mechanic At Hi-Way Paving, we are general contractors in the construction field that specialize in significant amounts of concrete paving, storm drainage, and excavation on highways and airfields. The Master Mechanic serves as the lead technical authority in the maintenance shop and acts as a working foreman, supporting the Shop Manager in overseeing daily repair and maintenance operations. This role provides hands-on leadership, advanced diagnostics, and technical guidance for the repair and maintenance of heavy equipment, fleet vehicles, and paving equipment. This position is responsible for setting technical standards in the shop, mentoring mechanics, troubleshooting complex issues, and ensuring work is completed safely, efficiently, and to a high standard. The Master Mechanic plays a critical role in building a new shop operation from the ground up. This position will be based in Charlotte, North Carolina. What You'll Do: Technical Leadership & Repairs Perform advanced diagnostics, troubleshooting, and repair of heavy equipment, paving equipment, trucks, and trailers Serve as the go-to technical expert for complex mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, and powertrain issues Review repair plans and methods to ensure quality, efficiency, and proper procedures Assist with root-cause analysis for recurring equipment issues and failures Shop Leadership / Foreman Duties Act as a working foreman, supporting the Shop Manager with daily shop workflow and priorities Provide technical direction, and support mechanics and technicians as needed Monitor work quality and ensure repairs meet company standards before equipment is returned to service Lead by example with safety, workmanship, and professionalism Mentorship & Training Mentor and support mechanics and apprentices, sharing best practices and technical knowledge Assist with on-the-job training and skill development within the shop Help establish standard repair procedures and maintenance practices Equipment & Maintenance Operations Support preventive maintenance programs to maximize equipment uptime and reliability Coordinate with shop leadership on scheduling repairs and managing equipment downtime Work closely with parts and inventory personnel to identify needed materials and recurring usage Provide input on tooling, equipment needs, and shop setup as the operation grows Safety, Quality & Compliance Ensure all work is performed in accordance with safety policies and job-site requirements Promote a clean, organized, and efficient shop environment Support compliance with DOT, OSHA, manufacturer, and company standards What We Look For: Experience 10+ years of hands-on experience as a heavy equipment or diesel mechanic (required) Proven experience working on heavy civil construction equipment and paving equipment (e.g., dozers, excavators, loaders, graders, pavers, rollers, milling machines, trucks) Prior experience serving as a lead mechanic, foreman, or informal shop leader strongly preferred Technical Skills Advanced diagnostic and troubleshooting skills across mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, and electronic systems Strong understanding of diesel engines, hydraulics, powertrain systems, braking systems, and emissions systems Ability to read and interpret service manuals, schematics, and technical documentation Comfortable using diagnostic tools, software, and manufacturer-specific systems Leadership & Communication Ability to lead, coach, and support mechanics in a fast-paced shop environment Strong communication skills with shop leadership, technicians, and operations teams Ability to make sound decisions and prioritize work under pressure Certifications & Requirements OEM certifications or advanced technical training (preferred) Ability to gain clearance for restricted/high-security zones (e.g., airport AOA, military bases). Valid driver’s license, CDL preferred. Physical ability to lift 50 lbs., climb, walk, kneel, squat, push, pull, and enter confined spaces.
