JOB DESCRIPTION:

In order to support E-Aircraft Systems, part of Airbus X-Labs, Airbus Defence and Space is looking for a

MASTER’S THESIS STUDENT (D/F/M) ON MODELING THE ELECTRICAL NETWORK OF A HYBRID POWER TEST BENCH

Master Thesis opportunity:

We are looking for a Master Thesis Student interested in a topic around “Modeling of the electrical network of a hybrid power test bench” (D/F/M) to join us at the Airbus site in OTTOBRUNN in E-Aircraft Systems, part of Airbus X-Labs. One of the main activities of this group is to work on innovative technology bricks related to hybrid or full electric propulsion of Aircraft, as well as system integration and testing.

  • Location: Taufkirchen / Ottobrunn
  • Start: as soon as possible
  • Duration: 5-6 Month

Hybrid and Electric Propulsion systems represent some of the biggest industrial challenges of our time. With the X-Labs organization, we are targeting advanced technological breakthroughs that could be key enablers of our long-term goal to ‘electrify the skies’.
Through electrification and hybridization, we are driving a step change in aviation performance. Enabled by the high efficiency of electric propulsion chains and by allowing us to significantly rethink air vehicle design. These advances are opening up the design space and enabling us to look at new concepts and new markets previously impossible to envisage.
1XAD is contributing to several Airbus initiatives, for example the team is developing and testing electrical and hybrid propulsion systems in the frame of the Airbus ZEROe pre-program, Zero Emission Demonstrator, UAM and CryoProp.

DESIRED SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS

You are looking for a master thesis in Germany and have a background in Aerospace engineering, Mechatronics, Electrical Engineering or similar, and you have the following competences:

  • Currently enrolled in a Master’s program
  • Strong knowledge of electric motor system, power electronics and control systems
  • Hands-on experience with ( Matlab/simulink ) simulation tool
  • Familiar with electric motor test benches or similar setup
  • Strong analytical and problem solving
  • Good communication skills both written and verbal to interact with several teams and produce documents
  • Knowledge of aircraft propulsion is a plus
  • Comfortable working in English, German language would be an advantage

EXPERIENCE LEVEL:

Student

Thesis detailed description:

  • System Modeling: Develop mathematical and simulation models for the test bench, including:
  • The power supply components (High voltage AC supply, transformers, AC/DC, DC/DC converter, power electronics, switching gears, protections).
  • Motors and load machines (e.g. induction or synchronous machines).
  • Behavioral Analysis: Simulate and validate the model against real-world measurements to ensure fidelity.
  • Perform power quality analysis (FFT, THD analysis, Filtering …)
  • Tool Usage: Utilize simulation tools such as MATLAB/Simulink or similar platforms to implement the models.
  • Collaboration: Work closely with our modeling & testing teams to understand system specifications, look for necessary data, and refine the model.
  • Documentation: Prepare detailed documentation of methodologies, assumptions, and results for academic and professional purposes.
  • You will make an important contribution to improving and extending the capabilities by building the simulation platform which can be used to grow and be further developed in the future.
  • This thesis is planned to begin in the first half of 2025 for an ideal duration of 6 months (start date can be adjusted). You will be joining a highly visible, publicly known development project, helping to build novel tools that will be used in the future development of this technology
