WHAT YOU WILL BE DOING

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Material Engineer to join the Materials External Laboratory and Special Process team within Rolls-Royce.
In this role you will join the Materials Engineering department working across civil and defence aerospace products, focussed on external supply chain materials engineering support. You will join a dynamic team and work in an environment that will allow you growth in developing breadth and depth in forging, casting, raw materials production, and special processes.
The role has significant global interactions working closely with the Procurement functions across multiple commodity groups. You will collaborate with colleagues from other materials capabilities as well as Manufacturing Engineering, Design Engineering, Purchasing and Quality. The team interfaces with the external supply chain as well as various external industry bodies.

RESPONSIBILITIES

In this role you will be a Rolls-Royce Technical Authority for the external supply chain with a primary focus on one or more of the following: metallic materials production, forging and/or casting; with occasional secondary support to special processes such as welding, non-conventional machining, and heat treatment. As part of this you will also:

  • Review and approve technical documentation such as methods of manufactures, data cards, FAIRs, MVAs, and Condition of Supply drawings.
  • Conduct supply chain surveillance audits across the global supply chain network in support of the annual risk assessment to reduce supply chain risk.
  • Interface with other Materials capabilities and other functions on projects and improvements across the lifecycle from new materials development and, new part introduction to in-service safety and lifecycle responses.
  • Collaborate with Procurement and Manufacturing Engineering on zero defects, quality and cost reduction activities within the external supply chain. To actively promote, encourage and support the identification and implementation of continuous improvement both within and outside their immediate sphere and prompt action across the wider team.
  • Support introduction of digital technologies and solutions to support lean improvements within team and wider supply chain interfaces.
  • Resolve problems through evaluative judgements. Analyses information from multiple sources, interprets results and identifies effective solutions by applying their own technical knowledge, expertise and engineering judgement.

At Rolls-Royce we put safety first, do the right thing, keep it simple and make a difference. These principles form the behaviours that guide us and are an essential component of our assessment process. They are the fundamental qualities that we seek for all roles.

  • Bachelor’s degree, Master’s or PhD in Materials Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or equivalent technical capability based on practical knowledge and experience.
  • Technical experience in materials engineering and or manufacturing processes with Aerospace experience preferred.
  • An ability to apply logical, analytical and innovative thinking to a range of technical problems.
  • Knowledge and experience of product integrity / liability and certification frameworks.
