Description Wage: $15.97 to $18.51 Job Type: Part Time (~24 hours per week) Closing Date: 10/15/2025 Purpose: Reporting to the Materials Handling Supervisor, the Materials Handler processes, shelves, and organizes Douglas County Libraries’ (DCL) materials with accuracy and efficiency. This role supports circulation functions, performs clerical tasks, and provides customer service while maintaining high attention to detail and quality standards. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Handling DCL Collections (65%) Shelves and organizes materials accurately using DCL’s classification system; routinely shelf-reads, shifts, and merchandises collections per brand guidelines. Pulls and processes customer holds, Prospector, and ILL requests, prioritizing accuracy and timely service. Performs collection maintenance by running reports, updating item statuses, and removing damaged materials following proper procedures. Collaborates with team members and volunteers to support daily workroom operations and uphold circulation best practices. Automated Materials Handling (20%) Processes incoming and outgoing materials manually and using Automated Material Handling (AMH) equipment in a high-volume environment. Operates and monitors all functions of the automated handling equipment and material bins according to training and safety guidelines. Support the AMH system with basic troubleshooting such as E-stop, clearing jams, preventing common technical issues and restarting the system. Monitor and report AMH errors, unusual noises, behavior or changes in the AMH system and other department equipment such as computers, printers, scanners or RFID readers. Customer Service (10%) Delivers exceptional, customer-first service by addressing inquiries, protecting privacy, and creating a welcoming, hospitality-driven environment. Maintains a professional presence through positive communication, appearance, and behavior in both public and staff-facing areas. Builds strong relationships with customers and colleagues across departments, contributing to a collaborative, service-oriented culture. Other Duties (5%) Develops proficiency in relevant industry and organizational technology. Engages in DCL’s performance feedback process and meets departmental expectations, policies and procedures. Performs other duties as assigned. Ability to follow written and oral instructions Ability to learn the Dewey Decimal system and other library filing systems Basic skills in Microsoft 365 or other productivity, collaboration, and cloud-based services software. Ability to learn and apply new technologies. Preferred One year of library experience, customer service experience, office experience or related work experience High School diploma or GED Equivalent A combination of experience and education will be considered. Physical Requirements: Must have a reliable method of transportation between all DCL locations. Must have the physical ability, stamina, mobility and manual dexterity to support a 7-day a week operation. Stand, walk, bend to floor level, reach to a height over 70 inches, and read a minimum 8 point font, repetitively for extended periods. Handle materials, push/pull loads with a force of up to 35 pounds, carry 15 pounds, lift up to 35 pounds, and grip up to 15 pounds, repetitively. Kneel, squat, climb, and work at a computer workstation, frequently. Participate in meetings and events at various locations and at varied times throughout the day.
