Materials Handler Pay Grade: 3 (Non-exempt) Part-time: 15 hours a week Schedule Wednesdays 4:00 pm - 9:00 pm Thursdays: 4:00 pm - 9:00 pm Fridays 4:00 pm - 9:00 pm Under the supervision of the Materials Handler Supervisor, materials handlers assist in coordination of the flow, handling, shelving, and organization of all library materials. Minimum Qualifications (education, experience, and certifications): Relevant work experience Basic computer skills and comfort with learning new technology Minimum Competencies (knowledge, skills, and abilities): Excellent communication and social skills Broad cultural competency knowledge and skills, and ability to work effectively with a culturally diverse workforce and community Commitment to and demonstrated success discussing, integrating, and promoting diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility Demonstrated ability to: develop and maintain strong working relationships with colleagues anticipate and creatively solve problems with a flexible mindset work independently and handle multiple initiatives requiring prioritization, organization, and attention to detail while meeting deadlines positively adjust to change Deep personal dedication to public service and strong customer service skills Preferred Qualifications: Experience working in a public library High school diploma or equivalency Preferred Competencies: Multilingual skills in English plus another language(s) relevant to the Skokie community Essential Functions: Assists with processing returned materials through the Automated Materials Handling system (AMH) and prepares carts of materials for shelving; may do basic troubleshooting with the AMH. Participates in materials management activities, including but not limited to retrieving materials, preparing reserved items, shelving, rearrangement of materials on shelves, refilling displayed materials, repairing damaged materials, AV cleaning, assisting with materials withdrawn from the collection, and sorting donations. Responds to general assistance inquiries regarding materials on hold, services, and information; may assist library users in accessing and retrieving materials. Noise level is generally moderate Scheduling may require availability during any library operating hours, including days, evenings, weekends, and occasionally when the library is closed. Although a weekly schedule is established, the needs of the library may require scheduling changes and flexibility.
