JOB OVERVIEW

The Mechanic/Fabricator is responsible for overseeing the daily operations of the company’s shop, ensuring that all equipment and tools are repaired/maintained, equipment/material orders are bundled and prepared, and fabrication of steel angle in the shop attending site to assist with installation and welding connections. This role involves taking ownership & accountability of our shop and yard, coordinating with Operations Manager & Project Coordinator, and ensuring that all shop activities comply with safety and quality standards. The Mechanic/Fabricator should also have good problem-solving abilities, as they will often need to troubleshoot issues related to equipment or work processes.

REQUIREMENTS/QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Proven experience as a Shop Foreman or similar role in a manufacturing or construction setting.
  • Mechanically inclined and can conduct troubleshooting of construction equipment.
  • Small-Engines mechanic that can perform all preventative maintenance on construction equipment.
  • Strong knowledge of safety regulations and procedures.
  • Excellent leadership and team management skills.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and blueprints.
  • Strong problem-solving abilities and attention to detail.
  • Proficiency with tools, machinery, and equipment used in the construction industry.
  • Good physical condition, able to lift heavy objects and stand for extended periods.
  • High school diploma or equivalent. Post-secondary technical or trade school training is a plus.
  • Certificates: Working at Heights, WHSA, WHMIS, AODA, Mobile Elevated Work Platform
  • Valid G License
  • AZ/DZ designated license is an asset
  • Rolloff Truck experience is an asset
  • Clean Drivers abstract is an asset
  • Must have experience driving Excavator, Skid Steer, Forklift and Mobile Elevated Work Platform.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Physical expectations of this role include bending, squatting, crouching, reaching, lifting up to 75 pounds, and working indoors/outdoors when required by the job.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Metalworking and welding is an asset. (Stick & Mig)
  • Blueprint/Drawing reading ability.
  • Commitment to safety and adherence to all relevant regulations.

EXPERIENCE

  • Proven experience in shop management
  • Aptitude with Microsoft Office software suite
  • Experience with MIG and Stick Welding, CWB is an asset.
  • Proficiency in machine operations such as excavators, skid steers, and forklifts
  • Mechanical knowledge for equipment maintenance and troubleshooting.
  • Several years of experience in a related fields.
  • DZ/AZ license an asset

Responsibilities
  • Oversee daily operations of the shop, ensuring efficient workflow and productivity.
  • Enforce all safety policies and procedures, ensuring a safe work environment for all employees.
  • Plan and coordinate job scheduling, ensuring timely delivery of materials & equipment to be delivered to project sites.
  • Read drawings, fabricate angle and other steel into various shapes to be embedded in concrete.
  • During forming procedures, the fabricator will mobilize to site to assist in the installation and splicing of angle onto forms.
  • Work with operations manager to design and build various different racks or shelving with steel to improve operations and storage capacity.
  • Maintain records of equipment usage.
  • Conduct and/or dispatch repairs for broken tools and equipment, taking ownership of repairs and equipment from investigation, and ordering parts, to repairing the equipment to be in service (equipment to be maintained includes pickup trucks, mini excavators, mid-size excavators, and skid steers as well as other small to medium size tools).
  • Ensure all tools, equipment, and machinery are properly maintained and in good working order.
  • Leadership skills to oversee and manage the workforce, motivate team members, and maintain a positive work environment when teams are assigned to the shop for pre-fabrication.
  • Excellent communication skills to effectively coordinate with team members, convey job expectations, and discuss job progress or issues with management.
  • Organizational skills to manage multiple tasks simultaneously, prioritize job orders, and meet deadlines.
  • Problem-solving skills to address issues that may arise during production or service processes, find the root cause and implement effective solutions.
  • Understanding of safety procedures and regulations to ensure the health and safety of all employees and compliance with all pertinent laws.
  • Physical stamina and dexterity to stand for long periods, move around the shop floor, and handle various tools and equipment.
  • Operate and drive various types of heavy equipment machinery such as skid steer, forklift and mini excavator.
  • Conduct pre/post-operational checks on equipment, and clean, lubricate and refill equipment as necessary
  • Ensure equipment is operated safely and efficiently.
  • Conduct routine inspections and maintenance on machinery.
