JOB DESCRIPTION

We are currently hiring for the position of permanent full-time Chargehand in our Mechanical department. The successful candidates will become part of our hardworking, energetic team. The Mechanical Department Chargehand is responsible for overseeing and coordinating daily activities of mechanical trades personnel to ensure safe, efficient, and high-quality execution of mechanical tasks. This role acts as the first-line lead, providing direction, support, and quality assurance in the installation, maintenance, repair, and commissioning of mechanical systems and equipment.As a Chargehand, you will perform and oversee a variety of tasks throughout the production process, while upholding high standards of safety, care and efficiency. You will have an opportunity to develop new skills including specific to the shipbuilding/Ship repair industry.

Duties which the Chargehand will perform and oversee:

  • Supervise and lead a team of mechanical technicians
  • Plan, assign, and monitor mechanical tasks to meet production targets and deadlines.
  • Ensure all work is performed in accordance with company safety policies, procedures, and relevant regulations.
  • Collaborate with engineers, supervisors, and other departments to coordinate mechanical work.
  • Read and interpret technical drawings, specifications, and work packages.
  • Monitor quality of workmanship and conduct inspections to ensure compliance with standards.
  • Provide on-the-job training and mentorship to junior tradespersons and apprentices.
  • Assist with troubleshooting mechanical systems and recommend corrective actions.
  • Maintain accurate records of work performed, materials used, and personnel attendance.
  • Report any incidents, equipment failures, or delays to supervisors promptly.
  • Support continuous improvement and contribute to a safe, organized, and productive work environment.
  • Other duties as deemed necessary and requested by the Production Manager.

General Qualifications (include but are not limited to the following):

  • Must be able to work physical labour in various weather and all hours.
  • Applicants must have strong multi-disciplinary skills and a proven record of managing work in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Journeyperson or Red Seal Certification in a Mechanical Trade (e.g., Millwright, Pipefitter, Mechanical Fitter, etc.).
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in a mechanical trade, including 1-2 years in a leadership or supervisory capacity.
  • Strong understanding of mechanical systems, fabrication, and maintenance procedures.
  • Ability to interpret technical drawings, schematics, and specifications.
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Proven ability to lead a team in a fast-paced, high-demand environment.
  • Solid knowledge of workplace safety practices and regulations (e.g., OH&S).
  • Experience in [industry-specific requirements, e.g., marine, heavy industry, fabrication] is an asset.
  • Customer oriented – must be able to calmly manage disgruntled customers if necessary.
  • Capacity to manage and motivate.
  • Good knowledge of MS Office (Excel, Word).
  • Good interpersonal skills to develop close relationships with welding/fabricating staff and customers.
