Our client is a well-established Australian manufacturer of engineered mechanical equipment, with in-house design, manufacturing and testing under one roof and facilities across Australia, the US and the UK. They are seeking an experienced Mechanical Design Engineer to take ownership of complex mechanical and drive-system design across their product range. This is a hands-on design role for someone who understands machinery from first principles and is comfortable moving from concept through prototyping to production. Reporting to the project lead, you will design and develop mechanical systems and the assemblies they sit within, and stay involved through build, test and validation.

Key responsibilities

  • Design and develop complex mechanical systems and rotating/drive assemblies from first principles
  • Develop 3D models, assemblies and manufacturing drawings for components and full assemblies
  • Perform FEA, tolerance analysis and manufacturability assessment to optimise performance and reliability
  • Generate manufacturing drawings, schematics and Bills of Materials
  • Take designs through prototype development, testing and production implementation
  • Lead Root Cause Analysis (RCA) and FMEA investigations
  • Work alongside the workshop and test team through build and validation
  • Prepare technical documentation and ensure compliance with relevant standards

Experience & requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline
  • 4–8 years' experience in mechanical design, ideally within heavy machinery, mobile equipment or a comparable industrial sector
  • Strong practical, hands-on engineering ability and DFM experience
  • Advanced 3D CAD proficiency - Autodesk Inventor preferred
  • Experience with FEA tools and interpretation
  • Ability to produce high-quality manufacturing documentation and BOMs
  • Familiarity with welding techniques, material selection and manufacturing processes
  • Experience with PDM systems
  • Experience with gear or gearbox design advantageous
