Minneapolis, Minnesota POSITION: Mechanical Design Engineering Lead DEPARTMENT: Engineering Department Primary Objective of Position: The Mechanical Design Engineering Lead is responsible for directing the work of Mechanical Engineers and Design Drafters, ensuring workload is allocated based on skills and availability. The role spans all phases of customer orders—including sales, design, manufacturing, assembly, testing, and field service—while driving process improvements, cost reduction, product quality, and continuous mechanical innovation. Major Areas of Accountability Provides daily guidance, direction, and performance feedback to Mechanical Engineers and Design Drafters; ensuring a high-level of performance. Sets clear job expectations, monitor results, and provides coaching and discipline as needed. Develops project plans, budgets, and schedules to ensure on-time, on-budget delivery. Forecasts manpower and technical resources; adjust assignments to meet business needs. Tracks expenditures, analyze variances, and implement corrective actions. Provides expertise in structural analysis, bearing and lubrication design, rotordynamics, vibration, CFD, thermal analysis, and FEA. Develops and maintains design standards, methods, and tools (calculations, spreadsheets, software). Incorporates manufacturing input to ensure cost-effective, defect-free, and manufacturable designs. Directs standardized models to reduce cost and design cycle time. Collaborates with sales, manufacturing, test, and field service teams to resolve technical issues. Reviews customer specifications, provides technical advice, and conduct site visits as needed. Ensure compliance with ISO 9001 and company engineering systems. Drives development of new product solutions and enhancements to existing designs. Ensures engineering tools and analysis methods remain calibrated with test data. Knowledge / Skills / Abilities: BS in Mechanical Engineering (machine design emphasis preferred). 5+ years in industrial manufacturing; engineered-to-order product experience preferred (motors/generators or similar complexity). Strong background in machine design and mechanical analysis (structural, lubrication, rotordynamics, vibration, CFD, thermal, FEA). Proficiency with SolidWorks, AutoCAD, ANSYS, FORTRAN, and Microsoft Office Suite. Knowledge of ISO 9001 documentation requirements. Proven leadership and people management ability. Strong communication and customer-facing skills. Strong presentation skills with ability to present to all levels of management. Ability to prioritize shifting workloads and manage multiple projects. Domestic and international travel up to 25%. Physical Requirements: Ability to occasionally ascend/descend scaffolding, ladders or several flights of stairs. Ability to occasionally lifts and move 25 pounds. Salary: $85k to $95k Will compensate with experience. Position is full-time.
