George A. Wright & Son (Toronto) Ltd., a Tessera Group Company, has been building a tradition of quality and customer service in the food, pharmaceutical and consumer goods manufacturing industries since 1894. We design, manufacture, and install all kinds of material handling equipment in manufacturing facilities throughout the GTA and South-Central Ontario.
We are seeking a skilled Mechanical Designer to support a specialized project focused on designing safety guarding solutions for a customer’s food manufacturing facility. The successful candidate will create practical, compliant, and efficient guarding systems that meet food industry standards, protect personnel, and integrate with existing production equipment and processes.

Qualifications, Skills, and Attitude:

  • Diploma or degree in Mechanical Engineering Technology, Mechanical Design, or a related field.
  • 3+ years of experience in mechanical design, preferably in industrial equipment or safety guarding.
  • Proficiency in CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks, AutoCAD, Inventor).
  • Strong knowledge of machine safety standards and guarding requirements.
  • Experience working in food manufacturing or sanitary design environments is an asset.
  • Ability to interpret engineering drawings, P&IDs, and technical specifications.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for customer and vendor interaction.
  • Ability to travel to and work at customer facilities as required.
  • Safety- and compliance-focused mindset.
  • Practical design approach with consideration for fabrication and installation.
  • Strong organizational and documentation skills.

Responsibilities

The Mechanical Designer is responsible for developing detailed mechanical designs, 3D models, and engineering drawings for safety guarding. This role requires strong proficiency in CAD software, an understanding of manufacturing processes, and the ability to collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure designs meet functional, safety, and cost requirements.
This is a 6-month contract position with the potential to turn into full-time role.

Key Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Develop detailed 2D and 3D mechanical designs for custom safety guarding solutions.
  • Conduct site visits to the customer’s food manufacturing facility to assess existing equipment and layout.
  • Collaborate with project managers, engineers, and customer representatives to capture requirements and constraints.
  • Ensure designs meet applicable safety standards including Ontario OHSA, CSA Z432 (Safeguarding of Machinery), and food industry requirements.
  • Create accurate fabrication and installation drawings, bills of materials, and supporting documentation.
  • Consider cleanability, hygiene standards, and material compatibility in design for food manufacturing applications.
  • Identify and resolve design challenges to ensure safety, compliance, and functionality.
