Position Summary
American BOA is seeking a dedicated and skilled Mechanical Design Engineer to join our team. This role provides crucial support for our flexible metal piping products, including bellows, expansion joints, and hoses, which are sold into the Aerospace and General Industries. The primary responsibilities encompass the full product lifecycle, from bellows development and process engineering to tooling design, equipment troubleshooting, and prototype creation. The successful candidate will collaborate with an interdisciplinary team to deliver innovative solutions that meet customer demands.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Design hydroforming tooling tailored to internal and external specifications.
- Develop and optimize hydroforming parameters to ensure bellows consistently meet drawing specifications.
- Create and implement a robust system for accurately measuring all pertinent features of bellows.
- Advance bellows forming prediction capabilities through analytical methods, experimental studies, or a combination of both.
- Provide technical support for the design and construction of new hydroforming equipment.
- Oversee and effectively manage multiple projects and strategic initiatives simultaneously.
- Actively support New Product Introduction (NPI) efforts as an integral member of a multidisciplinary team.
- Support existing equipment and products, proactively identifying and implementing improvement opportunities for both equipment and processes.
- Develop and maintain comprehensive documentation for all purchased and internally developed equipment.
- Review product development requirements to assess compatibility with processing methods to determine accurate costs and schedules.
- Evaluate product designs for manufacturability, providing constructive feedback to internal and external customers.
- Prioritize safety, intuitive user interfaces, and ergonomic considerations throughout the design process.
- Prepare and write detailed equipment specifications, installation guides, work instructions, technical manuals, training materials, and qualification protocols.
- Support hydroforming equipment and product validation activities.
Preferred Skills and Work Experience
- Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of 5 years of relevant engineering and manufacturing experience.
- Proficiency in industrial hydraulics systems and their control.
- Demonstrated experience simulating and analyzing plastic deformation material forming processes. Knowledge of DEFORM analysis software is highly preferred.
- General knowledge of fluid system components and their applications.
- Strong experience with sheet metal forming, tube bending, and welding of stainless steels and nickel alloys.
- Proven ability to work hands-on with various pieces of mechanical equipment.
- Intermediate skill in Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T).
Additional Competencies
- Statistics: Intermediate knowledge of statistics, including the ability to perform Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) and construct various types of linear regression models to support ANOVA.
- Statistical Software: Experience using commercially available statistics packages (e.g., R, Minitab, JMP).
- Design of Experiments (DoE): Experience developing and analyzing results from Design of Experiments.
- Optimization: Familiarity with non-linear optimization techniques.
- Measurement Systems: Experience performing Measurement System Analysis.
- Seals: Experience designing seals using o-rings.
- Instrumentation: Basic experience with machine instrumentation (e.g., proximity sensors, temperature sensors, position transducers, pressure transducers).
- Procurement: Experience writing purchase specifications for capital expenditures.
- Risk Analysis: Familiarity with performing Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA).
- Software Proficiency: Proficient in Microsoft Excel, Outlook, and Word. Advanced skills in Excel, Microsoft Project, or other relevant software are a plus. Familiarity with an ERP or MRP system such as SAP is a plus.
- Communication: Excellent professional communication skills (written and verbal).
- Organization: Excellent organization skills with the ability to multitask and prioritize with minimal supervision.
- Programming: Familiarity with Python programming is a plus.
Work Environment
Working conditions for this position are split between a standard office environment and a production environment. The role requires the ability to perform job duties that involve standing, kneeling, crouching, twisting the upper body, and lifting objects up to 25lbs.
