Description:
THE OPPORTUNITY
We have an opportunity for a Mechanical Engineer, close to chartership, who is looking for technically challenging work on cutting-edge projects, to become a permanent member of our creative, friendly Building Engineering Team in London.
You will work on some of the most exciting and innovative buildings across the world with leading architects. The team are currently involved in projects world-wide from feasibility stage through to practical completion. Current and recent projects include residential and social infrastructure projects such as Ebury Bridge Estate and Canada Water; rail projects such as Sydney Metro, Copenhagen Metro and Euston Station; commercial developments such as 6-8 Bishopsgate, 90 Long Acre; and a variety of projects such as large refurbishments in active buildings, residential projects with high sustainability targets and developing and delivering decarbonisation strategies. The focus of our work is split between new build developments and retrofit/refurbishment projects, given the drive towards both increasing sustainable solutions and supporting our clients reduce the carbon impact of their buildings.
In this role you will:
- Take a considered approach to all design problems to deliver technically excellent outcomes for our projects
- Work on systems including air conditioning heating, natural and mechanical ventilation, and building controls, understanding their impact on the environment and collaborating across disciplines to minimise it; including working on decarbonisation strategies
- Help to co-ordinate your own work with that of other disciplines including in-house specialists
- Predict and plan resources and associated costs/fees from a basic understanding of operating costs
- Provide technical guidance and mentoring to junior members of the team
- Proactively manage your own professional development
At Arup, you belong to an extraordinary collective – in which we encourage individuality to thrive. Our strength comes from how we respect, share and connect our diverse experiences, perspectives and ideas.
You will have the opportunity do socially useful work that has meaning – to Arup, to your career, to our members and to the clients and communities we serve.
Is this role right for you?
You are an engineer who enjoys working collaboratively in multi-professional design teams and taking responsibility for projects from inception to completion to achieve outstanding results. You are actively working towards chartership with experience in the field of Building Services Engineering and have a broad range of hands-on background in systems, installations and project sectors.
We’re looking for a candidate who:
- Has knowledge and interest in sustainable building design in terms of both energy and carbon, challenging yourself and the rest of the design team to achieve the optimum outcome for the project
- Is creative and inquisitive with an interest and awareness of building design beyond your own discipline, integrating requirements into holistically coordinated solutions
- Has expertise in using energy modelling software, like IES
- Is an effective communicator with the ability to present and explain thinking and design decisions
- Has interest in developing and integrating digital tools into workflows to streamline ways of working
