THE OPPORTUNITY:

The Mechanical Engineer is responsible for performing facility/infrastructure condition assessments (FCAs), energy audits, utility infrastructure condition assessments, decarbonization and electrification consulting, facility operations consulting, high performance building consulting for government and commercial clients.

  • Registered professional mechanical engineer.
  • Association of Energy Engineers Certified Energy Manager certification highly desired.
  • Knowledge and application of US Army Corps of Engineers Sustainment Management Systems highly desired. Use of BUILDER Sustainment Management System (SMS), including inventories, condition assessments and data entry using BUILDER Remote Entry Database (BRED). Project activities can also include obtaining and correlating existing building drawings, team calibration on BUILDER/BRED, preparing data collection devices, assessment of facility exterior, interior, and roof, as well as mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems (MEP) and providing scope and rough order of magnitude costs for needed repairs and condition index for each assessed facility.

  • The successful candidate shall be capable of understanding heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems. Shall be familiar with performing HVAC load calculations, energy models, life cycle cost analysis.
  • Experience conducting energy independence and security act (EISA) of 2007 or ASHRAE Level I to III energy audits.
  • Understanding and experience providing decarbonization and electrification support and recommendations to building owners/operators.
  • Ability to work independently with minimum oversight while maintaining schedule discipline.
  • Effective time management skills with the ability to meet tight schedules.
  • Must be able to communicate proactively with project managers, team leads, and project staff within reasonable timeframes during normally established work schedules.
  • Entreprenurial spirit and mindset, self-starter, and strong work ethic and problem-solving skills highly desired.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:

  • Candidates shall have a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical engineering or equivalent degree from an accredited university.
  • Masters or Science in Mechanical engineering a plus
  • Masters in Business Administration a plus
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience.

This position could expect travel up to 50% per month to client sites to support or lead field teams conducting facility condition assessments, energy audits, studies, site investigations, client meetings, charrettes, conferences, and other company related activities requiring travel. Depending on the employee location, work in the local Tetra Tech office or home office will constitute the remainder of work.

Mathematical Skills:
Ability to perform simple arithmetic and perform engineering calculations necessary to complete work and produce client deliverables.

Responsibilities

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Tetra Tech supports facility management and building operations and maintenance consulting, vertical and horizontal built-asset consulting, and overall owner’s representative consulting related to their built asset portfolio. This consulting spans the spectrum of existing facility construction, building operation, facility maintenance, performance studies such as facility condition assessments, energy audits, decarbonization studies, commissioning, and retro-commissioning, building renovation, indoor air quality, HVAC performance, upgrade and replacement recommendations, life cycle cost analysis, facility related control systems, and design. A FCA is an asset inventory and inspection and engineering analysis of the level of maintenance and performance history, failure trends, root cause analyses, and work requirements to be accomplished that establishes the physical and mechanical condition of an asset. Clients use the FCA as a planning tool for short and long-term budget requests. Tetra Tech is seeking registered, professional mechanical engineers qualified to assess and provide subject matter expertise on electrical, mechanical, fire protection, plumbing, and other facility systems, as well as MEP related linear utility systems.

The Mechanical Engineer will play a key role in supporting asset management and facility infrastructure projects. The successful candidate will assist Project Managers, or manage projects, in obtaining and assisting new clients and with planning and design of projects for a variety of municipal, state, and federal clients throughout the continental United States. Major duties/responsibilities of the position require a working knowledge of and the ability to lead/carry out the following tasks:

  • Perform facility assessments of buildings, structures, and other real property assets across the building mechanical/electrical/plumbing and fire protection systems. Work is typically performed in teams of 2-4 assessors with assignments split based on personnel experience and trained disciplines.
  • Conduct inventory and condition assessments of building systems consistent with the UNIFORMAT convention per ASTM Standard’s E1557 and E2018.
  • Provide subject matter expertise relevant to building electrical, mechanical, fire protection, plumbing, and other facility systems, as well as MEP related linear utility systems.
  • Support or conduct project management efforts, engaging clients, preparing deliverables, reports, conducting data analysis, implementing engineering judgement, researching products, materials, methods, best practices, and other forms of research to recommend professional opinion and develop factual basis for project materials.
  • Work with a project team to support a variety of commercial, education, municipal, state, and federal projects.
  • Aiding with project pursuits including the preparation of proposals and the development of project scopes, cost estimates, client positioning, and client development.
  • Field work on-site in both CONUS and OCONUS on trips lasting 1-3 weeks. Most field efforts are 1 weeks trips with roughly 2 trips per month.
