MECHANICAL ENGINEER

The Spaceport Company is building the future of spaceports, starting with offshore launch. We are a small, passionate and accomplished team, that supports the development, construction, operation and maintenance of offshore spaceports for various solid and liquid rocket launch systems.
As a Mechanical Engineer (Mid-Sr Level), you will be responsible for leading the design, development, build, test and operations of a variety of rocket launch ground service equipment (GSE), with a primary focus on offshore use. In this role, you will have extreme ownership over all aspects of concept creation, components design, analysis, manufacturing, testing, and validation for all Mechanical GSE related to launch vehicles. This role requires a Mechanical Engineering that is diverse enough to be well versed in structural, fluids, thermal, hydraulic, and mechanisms/electro-mechanical systems. You must be a “barbarian at the gates,” comfortable operating in fast-paced, often ambiguous, iterative design cycles. Since we are a small team, we all wear many hats, so you also need to be able to learn new things quickly and be willing to help anyone on the team.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

• Bachelor’s degree in an engineering discipline (preferably Mechanical/Aerospace)
• 4+ years of experience with mechanical systems development
• 4+ years of experience in hardware design, manufacture, assembly, test and/or flight
• Highly proficient in CAD, such as Solidworks, Autodesk, NX, etc

DESIRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

• Master’s degree in aerospace engineering, mechanical engineering, or similar discipline
• 5+ years working in multidisciplinary teams, projects, or programs in a rapidly changing, highly demanding environment
• Demonstrated understanding of materials, structures, fluids, and electro-mechanical systems.
• Demonstrated ability at successfully troubleshooting/resolving hardware test issues or anomalies from analyzing test data
• Experience with executing high quality work in a highly technical yet fast-moving environment with tight timelines and aggressive schedules
• Experience with systems-level analysis and modeling
• Experience working offshore.
• Experience with launch vehicles and/or launch vehicle GSE.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

• Positions are open to U.S. Citizens and Permanent Residents only.
• When necessary, must be willing to work long hours and weekends to support launch and critical timelines
• Ability to work offshore (for short periods) as necessary to support critical milestones.
• The engineering and operations team is headquartered in Merritt Island, Fl. This role will be in the Merritt Island location. Must be willing to relocate if outside of a commute area.
• Travel required on an as needed basis, ~25% of time.

• Lead the development, testing, and operations of various mechanical systems to support TSC Launch Operations. These systems may include, but are not limited to: blast protection structures, motion compensation equipment, upending mechanisms, cryogenic and non-cryogenic fluid loading equipment, low- and high-pressure pneumatic systems, hydraulics, and various types of GSE.
• Perform R&D level trades for designs that meet obscure and unique critical design requirements.
• Capable of moving from intense design work at a desk, to hands-on build, test and operations.
• End-to-end ownership (” Cradle to Grave”) of systems.
• Be able to perform risk-conscious decision-making under pressure
• Maintain a positive and constructive attitude in the face of technical and non-technical challenges
• Be proactive and flexible to changes in department/company strategy
• Go offshore to participate in (and lead) operations.
