The Ultra Engineering function manages a portfolio of specialist capabilities, generating highly differentiated solutions and products by applying electronic, mechanical, and software technologies in demanding and critical environments to meet customer needs.
The Ultra Mechanical Engineering function is responsible for the design, development, test, and documentation of mechanical assemblies for products, which includes new development, change orders, process improvements, and documentation. It supports designs throughout the concept, development and production stages of the system life cycle.
A professional at this grade possesses knowledge for specific fields and performs structured work assignments. Uses established procedures to solve problems by making judgments and gets work done with quality under moderate supervision.
The Mechanical Engineer will play a role in a multi-disciplinary project team developing new and innovative solutions for the Royal Canadian Navy and its partners in the Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) domain.

Candidates must be eligible to obtain the relevant security clearance required for the role, due to the nature of the programmes we deliver for our customers.
Job Description

Key responsibilities

  • Develop mechanical designs, ensuring compliance against requirements in all operating environments through analysis and testing
  • Create, review and approve CAD models, assemblies and their associated drawings and BOMs to applicable standards
  • Create, review and approve documentation required to satisfy the project plan
  • Develop and perform design verification tests involving the measurement of key performance parameters to satisfy product qualification
  • Develop technical performance specifications and corresponding acceptance testing criteria for sub-contracted work
  • Work with the project team to successfully deliver solutions that meet the customer’s needs, requirements to cost, quality and schedule
  • Work with the manufacturing and production departments to transition designs to production
  • Support cost estimation activities
  • Ensure mechanical engineering activities are performed in accordance with company process
  • Occasional travel within Canada, US or Overseas may be required

Role requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering
  • Self-motivated, adaptable, and attentive to details
  • Strong communication skills; positive attitude
  • Ability to work on Canadian Controlled Goods and US ITAR controlled articles
  • Candidate must be capable of acquiring a NATO Reliability and Secret security clearance

Qualifications / skills

  • 2+ years experience developing mechanical systems P.Eng or working towards Registered Professional Engineer
  • Experience designing components using various fabrication methods (i.e. machining, injection molding, welding, forming…)
  • Experience developing products in the marine and defense sectors
  • Experience developing and running environmental qualification testing
  • Design and qualification to military standards
  • Technical management of suppliers, including development of technical specifications and corresponding acceptance criteria
  • Development and/or improvement of manufacturing processes and technologies
  • Experience transitioning a product from design into production
  • 2+ years experience using SolidWorks or equivalent CAD tool
  • Experience using simulation/FEA tools
  • Able to work with and understand the perspectives of other engineering disciplines
  • Reasoning ability: Ability to define and document complicated problems and relationships, collect and document data, and establish facts by direct conclusions or deductive reasoning
  • Able to effectively prioritize and execute tasks in a deadline-oriented environment
