Toronto, Ontario, Canada (Hybrid)
We are currently looking for a Mechanical Engineering Intern to join the Hardware Engineering team in the Toronto.
Duration: 8 or 12 months (January 2026 up to December 2026)
Hitachi Rail provides signaling systems for metros and light rail systems. Our solutions provide efficient, safe and green transportation solutions for people around the world.
This position offers you the opportunity to immerse yourself in the dynamic world of urban transit. You will gain hands-on experience in hardware mechanical design, prototyping, and documentation release, while providing valuable support in these areas. By working in this role, you will gain insight into the product development processes within an engineering environment, significantly enhancing your understanding of the company’s hardware products and their integration with electrical designs.

Key Accountabilities

  • Assist with the Mechanical Design of Vehicle On-board Controllers, Wayside/Central racks, and HW Tools setups.
  • Help with the mechanical design and prototyping of the test setups used for the Qualification of hardware products.
  • Become familiar and use the company process
  • Assist our team with the release of the Engineering documentation.
  • Create, review, and verify mechanical hardware requirements

Key Requirements

  • The successful candidate should be working towards a bachelor’s or master’s degree from an accredited university or college in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
  • Completion of the second or third year of your undergraduate degree, or currently pursuing a master’s degree
  • Possess good written and oral communication skills, familiarity with project work environment
  • Knowledge of mechanical packaging components (cables, terminal blocks, connectors, fasteners, etc.)
  • Experience with Mechanical CAD tools (Creo/AutoCAD is preferred or Solid Edge)
  • Ability to work independently and multi-task
  • Ability to conceptually grasp the “big picture” and apply critical thinking to resolve issues
  • Attention to detail and curiosity to understand the criticality of activities
  • The ability to work 40 hours a week in a hybrid environment for the duration of the internship is essential. At least 2 days a week in the office.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Co-op student available for an 8-month term, with at least one additional quarter or semester of coursework remaining after the completion of the internship.
  • Previous coop work experience in the rail industry is an asset. Relevant school projects may be considered.
